Zadie Pamela Goring née Hill was a devoted Christian, a champion of education, and a staunch advocate for women’s rights. She was our matriarch, our guiding light, our family’s storyteller. Born in her beloved Frenchman Pedro Plains, Jamaica (St. Elizabeth Parish) on the 26th of January 1941 to parents Lynvall Boswell Hill of Treasure Beach, Jamaica and Lily May Beatrice Hill née Hydes of West Bay, Grand Cayman. She attended Clarendon College High School and joined every Florida reunion in her stooshest outfit until her health began to fail her in 2021.
Zadie joyously welcomed her first-born child, Suzanne Elizabeth Spence, with her childhood sweetheart Franklyn Albert Spence. She doted on little Suzy and often recounted her many adventures at dinner parties. On July 8, 1967, Aunt Zades (as many knew her then) married Neville (Dovie) Churchill Goring, a brilliant engineer and sailor like so many in her own family. Zades and Dovie welcomed a son, Christopher Goring in 1972. When Zadie’s beloved older brother Haldon passed away at sea, she welcomed two of his children, Monica Ogilvie and Mitchell (Lyle) Hill, into her home. Their presence made her family complete. While living in Jamaica, Zadie worked as an Office Clerk and then as a Bank Teller for Nova Scotia Bank. That period of her life with her house filled with four loving children set the tone for the rest of her days. Her ability to build a child’s self-confidence, teach patience, and instill a will of financial security made her a formidable mother and wife.
The changing political climate in Jamaica would bring Zadie’s family to the United States. In July of 1980, she moved from Jamaica to Florida with Suzanne, Christopher, and Feron Goring, Neville’s daughter. They settled in Miami, where she worked as a bank teller for four years. When her grandchildren came into the world, her focus shifted back to raising the next generation. She was at every ballet practice, every karate session, every teacher conference wanting to know just how her kids were doing. You can bet that every front office lady knew Grandma Zadie and had her number on speed dial. She created a network of Caribbean mothers who shared key details of American schooling and ensured their children knew every available avenue to success. A house full of laughing children is the memory she recounted most towards the end of her life.
She is predeceased by her parents Lynvall and Lily May Hill, her husband Neville Goring, eldest brother Haldon Hill, older sister Delores Hill, younger brother Kingsley, and grandson Keon Goring. Surviving her are her sisters Vivonne Hill and Monica (Mika) Murray.
Zadie’s legacy lives on through the many children she raised. She is survived by her children, Suzanne and Christopher; her nieces and nephews; cousins; her grandchildren, Nicole Spence (Fidel), Danielle Conti (Fiori), William McCoy Jr. (Hannah), Crystal Goring, and Tyler Goring; as well as her great-grandchildren, Keon Goring Jr., Giovanni Conti, and Gideon Spence Pena; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mom, Aunt Zades, Grandma Zadie, Grams: she was our social butterfly. She befriended you in line at the post office, while walking to after-school pickup, or in between searching for a new book at the library. If you weren’t friends with her, she just hadn’t met you yet. Her family and friends remember the sound of her warm, hearty laughter, her sun-kissed smile while gardening, her love for her grandchildren and great grandsons, her passion for her church family and their loving community. Her staunch wisdom, her healing hugs, and her loyal friendship will remain with us all.
