She was born November 4, 1912, the fourth daughter of John and Julia Knutson in Roland, Iowa. Ione graduated from Roland High School in 1930 and from Templeton Business College in 1931. Ione met the Love of her life, Robert Dean Shiffer, at the presentation of the concert “Messiah” at Iowa State University where Robert graduated in Engineering. After a proposal in the Rose Garden at Iowa State, Ione and Bob were married in the Lutheran Church on September 23, 1932 in Ames, Iowa. From this marriage, the happy couple was blessed with three children; Gerald born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1937, Mary born in Rantoul, Illinois in 1941 and David born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1945, where Bob worked on the Manhattan (atomic bomb) project. In 1947, the Shiffer family moved to Seventh Street in Miamisburg where Bob worked at the Monsanto facility. All of their three children graduated from Ohio State University. Ione loved music and was active in Saint Jacob’s Lutheran Church singing in the choir for over 50 years, Vivace Music Club, a Cub Scout Den Mother, election pole worker and a tutor for the Miamisburg School system. Ione was known for her apple pies and provided support and advice to Bob during his years on the Miamisburg City Council. Ione passed away in her home, where she had lived for 66 continuous years. Instrumental in her ability to be in her own home were many people; Shelia, her wonderful caregiver, Roy, her drill sergeant and next door neighbor (who did exercises with her every day), Lynn, her nutritionist and meal provider and many others. Ione was preceded to heaven by her husband, Bob, in 2004 and son, Gerald, in 2005. In addition to their three children, Ione has nine grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren with one additional great-grandchild on the way. Ione loved her Norwegian heritage and visited her relatives there. Ione will be forever missed by her family and friends but all feel blessed to have been loved by her over her 100 years on this earth. Services will be at the Gebhart-Schmidt-Parramore funeral home in Miamisburg on Monday, February 18 at 11:00 am with viewing beginning at 10:00 AM prior to the service. Interment will be at Hill Grove Cemetery with her Grandchildren as Honorary Pallbearers. A luncheon will be served at St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church immediately following the interment. I was so sad to hear of the death of Mrs. Shiffer. I grew up two doors down, and have great memories of turning the handle on the home made ice cream maker in the Shiffer's driveway, tasting the home made wines from the basement, and swinging on the big swings at the top of the hill! I learned about gardening when I got to visit Mr. and Mrs. Shiffer. Mr. Shiffer took me to a father/son dinner when I was about 10, at St. Jacob's, after my parents divorced, and I will be eternally grateful. They were both kind and gentle and patient.
After 30 years practicing law in Columbus, I live with my wife Mandy in Long Beach, and intend to again practice law out here. My brother Dave is a teacher in Milwaukee, where he lives with his wife Paula and three children. Doug is a teacher in Springboro, and has two college age sons. One is studying engineering at Iowa State University!
Thinking of you all fondly,
Sincerely, Dick Termuhlen

Ione will be missed, but always remembered for her wonderful example of a happy, positive, & Christian life. She dedicated herself fully into all her endeavors, and was so very proud of her family. I knew her best as her choir director at St. Jacob's Church. She sang Alto, and also contributed many funny stories, which entertained the choir during practices. Ione, you are unforgettable!
