Under the loving and watchful eyes of our Heavenly Father, Mildred Veneva Toomey, age 87, became a co-heir with Jesus on October 23, 2020. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, William D. Toomey. She is survived by her loving children and friends Patty K. (Toomey) Sandmann and Alan Toomey. Mildred was born to the late Zona and Samuel Garrett on July 25, 1933. Also preceded in death by her loving sister Bonnie Hampton and daughter-in-law Diane Toomey. Mildred was a loving and true friend to so many. She cherished being the “adopted grandmother” of the very special Bateman Family.
Mildred loved the Lord with all her heart, with all her soul, with all her mind, and with all her strength. Every day she lived with the guidance of the Lord and treated everyone she met with honesty and respect. She was loving, selfless, witty, determined, generous, brave, patient, kind, mischievous, available, forgiving, adventurous, supportive, creative and the ultimate care giver, and not necessarily in that order! She gave herself without reserve because she knew she was working ultimately for serving the Lord Christ. The Lord blessed us with her!
Mildred’s loving care for her family and friends was always her first priority. She could always be called upon whenever needed, no matter how big or small the issue would be. She could be counted on whenever there was a need for support, wisdom, sympathy, prayer, or just a listening ear. You could count on her advice to always be wise, her support to be real, and her sympathy sincere. She was a wealth of knowledge and vast experience. She could answer many questions posed to her from memory or from her caring heart. However, she was also humble about questions for which she had no answers, but she always left you feeling more confident that answers would be found.
Mildred cherished time with family and friends. She loved traveling, camping, boating and water skiing. She made time for others and taught Sunday School (for young children) and was a Girl Scout leader. In addition, she had a career that spanned in excess of 30 years. First at Leland Electric and then Monarch Marking, where she retired as a Quality Control Specialist. While working she completed her technical education at Sinclair Community College.
After her retirement, she volunteered her time at Cox Arboretum. She loved the interaction and the teaching role as a tour guide and had a very special place in her heart for the butterfly house. She provided valuable ideas in the development and sustaining of the house, resulting in a love for butterflies. This passion led her to become a Master Gardener so she could provide the correct plants and habitats that supported the butterflies and hummingbirds for which she had such fascination. During these full retirement years, she also enjoyed many fun excursions with the ladies of the Red Hat Society, and the other lifelong friends from Cox Arboretum.
God’s earthly creations became a fascination and inspired her quest to “I want to see it all”. Some of her travels included an amazing trip to Churchill, Manitoba to see the polar bears migrating to the Hudson Bay, rafting and camping trip on the Green River in Utah, a 10 day train excursion through the Western Canadian Rockies, another train trip through the Copper Canyon of Mexico, and hiking the Grand Canyon. She also went to England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, cruised the Caribbean, and explored the United States by bus multiple times. Our National Parks always left her in awe and wonder. Exploring them thrilled her immensely! Lifelong friendships were made during these travels.
Mildred’s life was rich with blessings and she lived in a spirit of gratitude for the mercy, grace and love she was given every day. And even though we grieve this tremendous loss, we should celebrate the victory she has in Jesus!!
A private family service will be held at a later date. It would be appreciated if you share Special Memories and/or Condolences at this website.
The family would like to extend a special “Thank you” to the team on the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Kettering Medical Center. They cared for our mom with tenderness and respect. And the chaplains were a tremendous comfort to us. Our pastor, R.W. Moody, always visited at the right, divine time; his presence and prayers were a comfort, an encouragement and his words brought peace to our souls. You are so appreciated and loved R.W.!
