ALICE M. OWENS, age 90, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2025. Beloved wife of John W; loving mother of Jacqueline Loyer (Ronald), John (Laura), Gary, Matthew (Lina), Jeannine Owens, and Bartholomew (Wendi); Grandmother of Billy, Dani (Mike), Jesse (Corinne), Bryana (Erick), Marlena, Kristin (Quinn), Owen (Julia), Evan, Kyle, Ryan, Sydnie (Ian), Abbie; Great Grandmother of Neekon, Holden, Jacqueline, John Maverick, Mason, and Dallas. Sister to Patricia (Deceased), Jim (Deceased), Rose (Deceased), and Bill.
Before Alice met Jack, she was studying to be a nurse, attending college on a scholarship, but her heart led her in another direction. After their whirlwind romance, they were happily married for 69 years.
While raising their children, not only in which she took great pleasure, mixed in with some shaking of her head, doing that, Alice also enjoyed baking bread which somehow always managed to disappear! With the many fruit trees in the yard, she took advantage of the cherries to make pies that also vanished. Perhaps it was the love she mixed in.
She served briefly as co-leader for a young girl scout troop and taught some of her sewing skills by having the girls learn about their heritage to make costumes to show off in a pageant.
Alice went on to become a coach’s assistant for a girls’ softball team, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
She was an avid seamstress who continually tried new projects which proved more challenging while her talents and skills grew. As a young family, we often went camping in a pop-up trailer. Guess who recreated the tent to replace the worn one? She did.
Her wonderful, loving husband, Jack, became engrossed in buying, restoring, and selling antique cars. Alice couldn’t help but get involved by removing and re-upholstering the seats, as well as recovering the floors and headliners.
Somehow, Alice made time to join a church group for which she often hosted gatherings and parties to enjoy, celebrate and pray for each other.
In her downtime Alice taught herself how to cross stitch and often used Santa as her muse; not just our jolly ol’ St Nick, but Santas from around the world, as well as occasional herbs and prayers. Alice, too, took a class in stained glass, proving another hidden talent.
Often times, Jack as a board member, would have to attend away from home, long weekend meetings, and off he’d go with Alice in hand so she could report back with tales of sightseeing, shopping, and supping! Ironically, they continued that trend after Jack retired and was recruited to do jobs internationally.
After the kids were older and more independent, Alice decided to get a job and started out as a bank teller only to go on to do clerical work at the Diocese of Cleveland. The latter was more of a joy than a job in which she stayed for 10 years before retiring.
The last several years of her blessed life, Alice aka Mom/Grandma/Great Grandma, kept active by enjoying her family and friends, always wanting to hear and share stories, smiles, and hugs. That, and an occasional glass of wine! She continued to pray the rosary daily which seemed to give her comfort and solace. We’ve been blessed, too, in knowing her. Alice Mae (Ryan) Owens will truly be missed.
