Born in Cleveland on March 19, 1936, he was the son of the late Milton and Virginia (Young) Vipond. Dal was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy and Denison University and served honorably in the United States Army in Korea. He met and married his beloved wife of 60 years, Young Joo Vipond, while stationed there. The couple lived overseas for many years as Dal served as a Director of CARE in Korea, Liberia, India, Uganda, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, and they travelled extensively to over 40 countries during this time. During their time abroad, Dal and Young Joo (and their son) had some “Indiana Jones” style adventures including being chased by and outrunning highway bandits in Liberia, a shoot-out in their yard in Bangladesh, and living through coup d'etats in Ivory Coast and Uganda. They also had to meet and work around Idi Amin, the infamous dictator of Uganda. Dal’s humanitarian work feeding children, building schools, roads, and irrigation projects, left a lasting impact in the countries he served, and he cherished the many friendships he made along the way. Following his return to the states and until retirement, Dal was President of a manufacturing sales company.
Dal was well-known for his kindness, easy demeanor, and great sense of humor. In his free time, he enjoyed growing many varieties of tomatoes, long road trips, and riding every roller coaster in Ohio and Pennsylvania with his son.
In addition to his wife, Dal is survived by his beloved son Dallas Y. Vipond and wife, Sandra, of Arlington, VA; granddaughter Natalie; and sister Florence of Eastlake, OH.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Griswold Home Care for their compassionate care and support.
