George served his country as an Army Veteran. As a paratrooper, he carried forward a steady pride in duty and a strong-willed resolve throughout his life. He later worked as a truck driver and was especially proud of his union membership with Teamsters 407. He was also a Freemason, a commitment reflected in his involvement with North Star Lodge and Widows Sons MC.
Above all, George was a devoted father and grandfather whose life centered on family. He is survived by his son, George Gordon III, and his wife Alanna; his daughters, Brooke Starnes and Corey (fiance), Jamie Starnes, and Janis Starnes; and his eight grandchildren, Kevin, Kayla, Jennifer, Travis, Jonny, Corynn, Bentley, and Aurora. He is also survived by his great-grandchild, Jillian; his sister, Sharon Eiben; and his brother, Michael Benz. George was the son of Clide Gordon and Sophie Benz (both deceased).
George’s interests were as spirited as they were varied. He found joy in motorcycles, cooking, traveling, and collecting art. He enjoyed playing guitar—classic rock as well as Spanish guitar—and could just as readily be found immersed in video games. He was a devoted college football fan, proudly cheering for The Ohio State. He loved tattoos, trains, and held Christmas close as his favorite holiday. Known as a master debater, he brought a sharp mind and a firm voice to the conversations that mattered to him.
In the face of hardship, George showed uncommon strength. A cancer survivor, heart attack survivor, and open heart surgery survivor, he met life with endurance and determination. Those who knew him will remember a man with a big heart—generous, protective, and always willing to help others—guided by pride in who he was and deep loyalty to the people he loved.
Among the phrases most often heard from George were, “Just forget about it,” and “Listen to me”—words that, in their own way, captured his directness, his care, and his desire to look after those around him. He will be deeply missed and respectfully remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Craciun Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 23 from 4-8 PM. Burial will take place the following day at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at 11:15 AM.
