He was the beloved husband of the late Karen L. (Springer) Mathews of more than 50 years.
Born in Cleveland, OH, he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Helen (Schindler) Mathews.
James was a graduate of the University of Dayton with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He worked at Cleveland Machine Controls and taught Electronics class for night school at Normandy High School in Parma. He worked for Burton Industries, Pawtucket, RI, Saftronics Fort Myers, FL and Carotron, Heath Springs, SC before retiring in 2003.
James was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years and had the honor of being elected Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge for many years. James enjoyed smoking his pipe, reading the newspaper, and spending time with his family.
He leaves two daughters, Rochelle M. Crowell and her husband Bruce, of Lincoln, RI and Lesley J. Mathews of Lincoln, RI; his son Scott A. Mathews and his wife Rosa of Fort Myers, FL; his two grandchildren, Brandon H. Crowell and his wife Victoria, and Shanlee M. Crowell; and a sister, Mariann Woycitzky and her husband Richard of North Royalton, OH.
A Mass of Christian Burial for both James and Karen will be celebrated on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 11AM at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 14865 Bagley, Rd., Middleburg Heights, Ohio, where the family will receive friends on Saturday from 1030AM until the time of Mass. Committal services will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brook Park, OH.
