They broke the mold after Joe came along. Had the honor and pleasure of working with Joe at ORDLL on the midnight shift for 3 years.
Joe had a heart of gold, and sometimes a head as hard as cement. He'd give you the shirt off his back, and never ask for anything in return.

I was fortunate to have attended the retiree lunch on Apr 9 and sit across from Joe. It was good seeing all of my old friends. I normally am not able to attend these gatherings since I am still working in DTWRR. Joe certainly was an advocate for the retirees and kept everyone abreast of the changes in benefits. He will surely be missed. I will always look back at the CLERR yearbook with a smile. He put so much time and effort into it. Thank you Joe. Rest in peace my friend.....Candy Kane

I was so sorry to hear of Joe’s passing.  We had kept in touch in the years since CLERR closed and, based on the addresses in the emails he used to send, it looks like he ended up working with a lot of the folks I had worked with in ORD ”TR” back in the 70’s.  
He was one of a kind and will truly be missed.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

DEAR SUE and family:
upon reading your email tonite, i am shocked and very sad to learn of the passing of my good and very long-time friend JOE's passing.
joe and i have known each other since high school.  i first met joe in our freshman history class; our teacher was the then named miss gerace.  joe, along with tim o'brien and stu sandow, became the primary stage crew.  in our junior year, i finally won a coveted spot on the cheerleading team, and this allowed me to spend a lot more time near the stage...and spend more time with joe and tim.  and it's when joe and i became real friends. 
yes, we lost touch there for a long time after high school, but it must have been 10-12 years ago that we reconnected and have been in continual contact ever since.  we talked on the phone at least several times a year, more when he wasn't feeling well. and we emailed constantly; sometimes even sending pictures of ourselves...or in joe's case, of the cats.
i'm having a hard time imagining how it will be to not get another email from him...especially with pictures of all kinds of airplanes. even now i can hear his voice in my head...and i will so miss his wonderfully strange sense of humor.
such a good guy.
...and you made him so happy.
i feel so badly for you, sue, and the whole family.
i wish there was something i could do for you.

hey this is kerra im sooooooooooooo sad that my gradfather joe died i loved him with all my heart i know if i come home one day and my room is organized that he was here the week he had the heart attack i was spending the night im so glad i got to spend that time with him the day he passed i was given the choice to go to school or see him i went to school because i could not handle it emotionaly i know hes here watching over me because i hear him telling me he is doing great ever night in my dreams he is also always talking to me in my dreams and is still always telling me to clean my room i knew him as just a big old fuzzy caring teddy bear who made me laugh all the time

Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.
