Craig Whitaker Johnson

November 22, 1948September 20, 2019

Surrounded by his wife and daughters, Dr. Craig Whitaker Johnson was ushered into heaven with hymns, prayers and praise on September 20, 2019. He is finally home!

Dr. J had a passion for learning and teaching. He was a loyal friend and caregiver and had a gift for making others feel like family. He was known to do the “unexpected extra” and his legacy will live on through those he has impacted.

Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, he grew up in Terrace Park, Ohio and was graduated from Mariemont High school in 1966. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University on a basketball scholarship, was graduated from The Ohio State University in 1971 and the Medical University of South Carolina in 1978. After a two-year Pediatric Infectious Disease fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Dr. Johnson opened his medical practice in Middletown where he was a solo practitioner for 30 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Eugenia Parker Johnson, his children Megan Sanders (Tom), Lesley Donley (Nick), Cristen Johnson (Josh Burnett), Madison Kakaris (Nick) and grandchildren Gage, Carson, Crew, Whitaker, Gabriel, Hayes, Beau, Dahlia, Collins, Malone, Finn and Berkley; and his brother Jay T. Johnson (Carol) of Middletown, nephew David, and niece Julie, cousins John Perkins (Connie), Richard Perkins (Traci). He was preceded in death by his father John Thomas Johnson and mother Minnie Belle Whitaker Johnson.

The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care provided by the Doctors and Nurses at Atrium Medical Center- the very halls he walked to care for so many. A special thank you to Tammy and Sarah Mullins who sacrificially cared for Craig in his final hours. We would also like to thank our dear friends Rev. Michael Vilardo and Pastor Lamar Ferrell who prayed over Craig and our family, loving us through this journey the past two months.

The outpouring of love from the community will never be forgotten and your prayers continue to carry our family. Dr. Johnson did not want a funeral service; however, we want to express our appreciation to you for your support. Please join us for an open house celebration on Tuesday, October 1 from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Berachah Church 1900 Johns Road Middletown, Ohio.

If there is golf in heaven, we know that Dr. J is waiting on the first tee in hopes that you, too, will be there one day!

I met Dr. Johnson 29 years ago, when I transferred to Middletown Regional Hospital’s Family Birth Center as an RN. The first time I met him, working in the nursery, he gave a professional nod when leaving that day and said, “Nurse Stewart”. I also was in need of a new Pediatrician for my 1 year old daughter. It didn’t take long observing all of the doctors assessing newborns that I approached Dr. Johnson and asked if he was accepting new patients. His wisdom, competence, dedication and old school thoroughness has set him above every other physician that I have ever known or worked with. I had the privilege of being one of his office nurses for a few years and what he taught me during that time has benefitted me every day of my nursing career since then. I can’t say enough what a blessing he has been to me. The Stewart family will miss him greatly.

I am deeply grateful for knowing Craig and experiencing what a wonderful father and grandpa he has been to my beautiful daughter-in-law Lesley and the wonderful grandkids we share. What a kind heart he has shown to me. Our family will miss him deeply. My prayers of love and peace and joy and hope will remain for Eugenia’s entire family. I’m sure we will continue to find ways to share and appreciate Craig’s life. He has been a true servant and healer.

I credit Dr. Johnson for saving my life. When multiple physicians couldn’t diagnose my condition Dr. Johnson came into my hospital room when I was 8 years old and diagnosed me within minutes of having Rheumatic Fever. He put me on the road to recovery. Thank you I am forever grateful 🙏🏻

My heart and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.

Sending prayers to the family of Dr. Johnson. He was my childrens peditrician for yrs. The school sent a letter home saying my oldest son was underweight and my youngest son was overweight. Same parents, same food, I remember Dr. Johnson wanted all the schools information because he wanted to give them his opinion on this subject!! He was a great Dr. and I'm sure a great man!! So sorry for your family's loss!

I am so saddened by the passing of Dr. Johnson. He was an amazing pediatrician to my kids, Sarah and Alex. He truly cared about them. He talked to them with patience and respect even when they were very young. I can remember him either meeting us at the ER or opening his office after hours to make sure he was the one to care for them. He was truly a special person and will always be remembered in our family with much appreciation and fondness. You deserve eternity in Heaven where you are. Rest in peace Dr. Johnson. Prayers with the family.

Dr. Johnson was one-of-a-kind. I knew as a young rad tech at MRH that he was an amazing pediatrician, and someday would want him to care for mine. Fast forward many years, and he took wonderful care of Alex. There were at least 3 times that he kept us from going to the ED: a laceration, a fractured arm, and dehydration. Once he gave Alex an IV in the office, going downstairs himself to retrieve a TV/VCR combo so he could relax and watch a movie while he got rehydrated! He was amazing like that. We miss him, and rejoice with you that he is with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! We will see him again someday and will get to tell him thanks for everything.

My daughter was maybe two having trouble breathing which was happening quite often. It was a cold New Year's eve. I called the answering service for Dr Johnson. He said meet me at the hospital in 20 mins. I could hear a party going on in the back ground. I don't know how many times I met him at the hospital or the office with my 4 daughters. He was a gifted doctor and loved the kids. I hope he is playing his golf game in heaven.
