He was born in Sylva, North Carolina on December 11, 1938 to William “Hayes” and Nettie (Fullbright) Beasley. He was the third son and youngest child; however, he and his brother Lamar never met their older siblings Harry and Joyce as they had died before Lamar and Jerry were born. Their family was close, hardworking and attended church together each Sunday. Lamar and Jerry would serenade guests, accompanied by their family’s player piano. Nettie trusted Jerry with the responsibility to milk their cow because he made sure that no dirt got into the pail.
Jerry attended NC State on scholarship and graduated in ‘61. He accepted an internship with the Mead papermill in his early 20s which steered him to Chillicothe, OH where he met his love, Judith (French) Beasley. On their first date, Jerry tried to take Judy to Old Man’s Cave but ended up getting lost along the way. Luckily, they found 63 years of marriage where they moved across Ohio, built their own home and raised four children together.
Jerry was known for his leadership in his church as a deacon, trustee and board member. He would spearhead projects like recording seating arrangements from community events, mowing the lawn and setting up the sanctuary for Christmas services. He sang as a bass in the choir, finding joy within the hymns. He faithfully attended his regular men’s bible studies, holding tight to the word of the Lord and the power of discipline. He was a cherished member of his congregation who was always willing to do what needed to be done. A true Jerry of all trades.
In his free time, Jerry was always active. He would garden in their backyard, harvesting heaps of vegetables to feed his family and neighbors. He was an avid bowler, recreational golfer, and passionate baseball fan; seldom did he miss a Sunday Red’s broadcast. His commitment to service was evident through his active membership in the Rotary Club, Junior Achievement and volunteering at the concession stands at Middletown High School while his kids were in marching band. His family loved giving him puzzles that would keep his hands busy and showcase his sharp mind.
He worked as a manager for Champion Papermill in Hamilton, then pursued an opportunity at Sorg Papermill in Middletown until he returned to Champion where he retired. His work took him around the world with trips to Atlanta, Europe and Asia. After he retired, he consulted with a papermill in Vancouver and worked with Rent-a-Computer. Jerry Beasley was a man who refused to stop.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph Lamar Beasley, Harry Ray Beasley and his sister, Joyce Ann Beasley.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Judith Beasley; children, Mark (Elisha) Beasley, Richard (Laura) Beasley, Michael (Lisa) Beasley, Renee Beasley; grandchildren, Zach Lykins, Brittney Beasley, Matthew (Jill) Beasley, Joshua Beasley, Kathryn Beasley, Noah Beasley, Drew Beasley, Ella Beasley, Ethan Griffith, Lucy Griffith and their dad, Brian Griffith; great grandchildren, Aislynn, Allen Jr., Sophia, Lucas; sister-in-law, Jannette (Queen) Beasley and many other loving family members and friends.
