Being raised in the Christian church, at age 19, she received a 13 year perfect attendance award
in Sunday school and began teaching children’s Sunday school at 17. The family moved to Longview, TX where she graduated from Longview High School, 1946, and played the flute in the marching band. Her love of music influenced her daughter Cindy, who built a career as a music teacher. Her skills as a homemaker influenced her daughter Betsy in the creative arts and whose quilts have been exhibited in the Colorado State Capitol and featured in magazines.
She married Shubert Ray Haney in 1949 and had two daughters, Cynthia Ann and Betsy Carol.
After moving to Midland in 1961 and she began a career at Draco International Oil Tool Company, serving as receptionist, Senior Secretary, and Advertising Manager until its close.
Her second career began in 1985 at Midland Memorial Hospital as Benefits Coordinator in the Human Resources Dept until 2004. She took special care of the employees, counseling, advising them and providing special opportunities for them and their families, through work grants, college scholarships, and paths to promotions. Betty was always ready to listen and advise. Today, many employees still remember her kindness and visited her.
As a member of Memorial Christian Church for 43 years, Betty served as Women’s Fellowship President, a Deaconess and Elder. She was also a member of the Westside Lion’s Club in 1971, where she served as Chairman for Lion’s Summer Camp for over 40 years, providing scholarships for camp to disadvantaged children. Betty became a Lioness (auxiliary member), then the first female Lion member, and the first woman elected as President of the chapter.
Manor Park became her permanent residence in 2017. The family wants to thank Hospice of Midland Raquel Enriquez, and all the staff and caretakers of Mabee Center for their kind and loving care. The family of Betty wants to thank Pastor Paula Brooks, First Christian Church, and friends H. A. Tuck, Marian Mussett and Jackie Hendricks.
She is survived by daughters Cynthia (Cindy) Hunsucker and husband Jack, and Betsy Carol Radney and husband Bob.
Funeral services will be Friday, June 18, 2021 at 2 PM at First Christian Church. Burial will be held privately by the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Food Pantry at First Christian Church, 1301 W. Louisiana St.
