(Coach) Bobby Dunn passed away peacefully on Monday December 2nd, 2013 in Midland, Texas following a brief but courageous battle with brain cancer. Bobby had just completed his radiation and chemo treatments and was looking forward to rehab. However, the Lord had other plans and was ready to call Bobby home. Bobby was born March 2, 1935 to parents Robert and Vida Dunn just outside Monroe, Louisiana. His parents later moved to Borger, Texas where he graduated from high school in 1953. After graduation
Bobby played basketball for Frank Phillips Jr. College and later went on to play basketball and baseball for Eastern New Mexico in Portales, NM. Bobby spent a couple of years playing minor league baseball for the Cleveland Indians. He later attended Adams State in Colorado where he received his master's degree in education.
Bobby started his coaching career in Roswell, NM and later moved his family to Sulphur Springs, TX where he coached high school football and basketball. In 1969 he met Tugboat Jones at a coaching clinic and Tugboat offered him a job on the spot. Bobby and his family moved to Midland and he began coaching at Lee Freshman. He later became the assistant principal at Lee Freshman and eventually ended up at Lee High School. After retiring he was asked to coach the Lee golf team for a year. That one year turned into 19 years and 6 district championships. He told everyone he had the best job on the planet. He retired in 2011 with over 50 years in the school system. Bobby had a positive influence on many people.
After retirement Bobby was a fixture at Hogan Park where he played golf almost every day. If he wasn't playing golf you could probably see him out in the rough looking for lost golf balls. It's estimated that he accumulated 40 to 50 thousand golf balls over the years. He shipped golf balls all over the world with EBAY and just last month sold 12,000 golf balls out of his garage. Bobby was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish and hunt. If he wasn't on the golf course he was fishing at either Lake Ivie, Hubbard Creek or fishing in tanks around Brady, TX with an occasional trip to Colorado. One of his latest catches included a 35 pound catfish.
Those that knew Bobby knew that he was a simple man that didn't treasure earthly possessions but enjoyed being outdoors and around friends and family and staying active. Many years ago Bobby was the broadcast announcer at Memorial Stadium for the local high school football teams and he was also the official score keeper for the Midland Angels and Midland Rock Hounds for 10 to 15 years. He loved watching sports especially watching the Los Angeles Dodgers. He could rattle off every major league statistic known to man.
Bobby is survived by his three sons Craig Dunn and wife Debra of Midland, Joel Dunn and wife Stefani of Royse City and Brian Dunn of Phoenix, AZ. Longtime companion and friend Pat Erwin of Midland, grandchildren Tara Holmes and husband Jordan, Austin, Katelyn and Kylie Dunn, Stephanie Surgenor and husband Matt, Sandi Todd and husband Scott and Jason Townes. Great grandchildren include Evan Holmes and Lexi Surgenor. Brother Roy Lee Dunn and wife Clessie of Odessa, Texas, sister Alice Ott and husband Henry of Borger, Texas and many nieces and nephews. Bobby also leaves behind his extended family of friends at Lee High and Hogan Golf Course which include Connie Baird, Rex Pollard, Dirk Parks and Joe Smith just to name a few. Last but definitely not least Bobby leaves behind his faithful companion Willie who jumped in his pickup one day at Lee Freshman over 13 years ago.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Vida Dunn and younger brother Jimmy Dunn.
Memorials can be directed to the Lee Golf Booster Club or the Boys and Girls Club of Midland. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and the nurses on the oncology and critical care floors at MMH.
