August 19, 1929 – April 20, 2021
Dortha Jewel Townsend Smith Dortha or Dot for short, was blessed by the Angels the day she was born. Weighing in at less than 3 pounds with bones so soft they would bend at the touch, she was carried on a pillow and raised on goat's milk until she was strong enough to be handled. Born in 1929, even before incubators were developed for preterm babies, her chances of surviving were very small. But survive she did. She not only survived but she flourished. It is clear that God had a plan for the small little girl with dark curly hair and the nickname of "Doodle Bug" who grew up to be the amazing woman we all knew and loved. She raised 5 children and knew the love of several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She outlived 2 husbands, both of her brothers and many, many close friends. She lived in Midland most of her life and although she spent her last years in San Angelo, and Tawakoni, Midland was always her Home. Today, we bring her back home to be laid to rest beside her husband of 37 years, Howard, and we can all rejoice knowing he has been patiently waiting for her to join him once again and that they will spend eternity together. Dortha, Mom, Grandma, we love you and we will miss you, but you will always be in our hearts and you will be remembered always.
Do not stand by my grave and weep. I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am a diamond glint of snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awake in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush, Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft star shine at night. Do not stand by my grave and cry, I am not there...I did not die.

I just wanted to say "Thank You" for all those that attended Mom's service and /or sent flowers, and those that posted memories or condolence's. A special Thanks goes out to those that prepared lunch for everyone afterwards, it was delicious and greatly appreciated.
It was great to see or here from you all and I hope everyone made it home safely. We will all miss Mom/Dortha in our own way but it is my heartfelt wish that when you think of Mom, you remember the twinkle in her eyes and the smile that was always on her face. Those represented the woman she was and the Love she felt for everyone. Mom was Love.
Again, on behalf the her kids,

Oh! Sweet Dortha Jewel!
Your radiant smile and sparkling eyes lit up the room. You were one of my daddy's double-cousins. My father was Milton and Dortha Jewel lived with the Walt Townsend family after her mother died.
Family....the Townsend bunch are good at appreciating, loving, and taking time for family. Dortha Jewel was an excellent example of this. She made me feel special every time I saw or talked to her. I think most of the Townsend cousins had that gift. Dortha Jewel was much loved and she loved much. She will be missed.
I pray you will not "grieve as those who have no hope."
Love in Christ Jesus to all, Eyvonne Townsend-Gunn

I do not think that I have ever known someone that had been through so many trials and yet exuded joy, laughter, and love like sweet Dortha! You, my precious lady are quite an example of how to love. And I will be forever grateful to have known you. I can only imagine the reunion in the heavens. I will smile with great joy every time I think of you and can't wait until I see you again! Thank you for living a life of gratitude before us.

Dorthy you were a bright light in all our lives, when you walked into a room your sweet smile cheered everyone up. You are beautiful inside and out and your love lifted us up. I have been missing you for a very long time. You let me live with you when I first moved to Midland and always was encouraging to me.
You and Howard stood up for Jerry and I when we got married in Midland, then when Kerry was born you were there when I went into labor you were always there to help me. You even gave Kerry his first bath.
Fast forward to Denton...... 7 and a half years later you came and stayed with us when Kim was born, you even had me playing bad-mitten two days before she was born to put me in labor, since she was 21 days late we needed to nudge her a little. You took Kerry to school, went on nature walks, cooked for him and Jerry,
visited me at the hospital. I was in the hospital several days with some complications, but you were our encourager and kept us going. Again,
you gave Kim her first bath.
I have loved and appreciated you soooooo
much through the years, we experienced a lot of sorrow when we were young, we both lost our mothers and even lived with Memma for a
while. I have always been thankful for our strong family bond.
You are my hero and I love you, I know you are with our Lord and Savior now, for that I am grateful.✝️ 😘❤️💕🕊
