

Elmer began life as the youngest of five children born in a dug-out home in Tatum, New Mexico, to Walter and Laura Martin. He worked as a farmer in Scurry County, and married Allie Chandler February 18, 1936, in Snyder, and started his family.
In 1952, he moved his family to Midland, Texas, where they remained throughout his career in the oil trucking industry. He retired from Turner Brothers Trucking at the age of 72 to begin his life of leisure. His beloved wife, Allie, passed away in May, 2008. He remained in the home in Midland, self-supporting, until he was moved to Corpus Christi, Texas to reside with his oldest son, Gary, in 2010. He became an Honorary Master Gardener in Nueces County, visiting schools, attending seminars, and the local botanical gardens along with Gary and Stephanie. His daughter, Carla Jane Martin Crow, resides with her family in Odessa, Texas; and son Randy Bryan Martin resides in Midland, Texas with his family. His son, Elmer Douglas passed away in November 1936.
His grandchildren include Marcia Lynn Hite Evans and husband, Weldon; Sean Scott Trotter; Amanda Roxanna Martin Higginbotham and husband Ron; Jacob Benjamin Martin and wife, Cindy; Christopher Martin and wife Lindsey; and Jennie Martin; great-grandchildren are Jonathan Michael Martin, Elizabeth Abigail Higginbotham Upchurch, Wyatt Higginbotham, and Devin Alexander Martin; and great-great-grandchildren are Brantley Upchurch and Brooke Allie Martin.
Elmer passed away quietly in his sleep, January 9, 2015, at his home in Corpus Christi attended by Angel Bright Hospice nurses and staff, along with Gary and Stephanie Martin.
Family visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday, January 12, 2015, at Ellis Funeral Home in Midland, TX.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at Ellis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
