

Evelyn Phillips Cowden, 93, of Midland, passed away Friday, December 9, 2011. She was born in Dallas, TX on September 7, 1918 to Edna and George Phillips. They moved to Midland in 1928 where Evelyn graduated from Midland High School. After graduation, she attended Hockaday Junior College; from there she went to the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. Evelyn married Wright Elliott Cowden, a Midland native, on October 19, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1996. She is survived by two children, Wright Elliott Cowden, Jr. of Midland and his wife Melanie; Carolyn Cowden Gigac of Dallas and her husband William. Two granddaughters, Sharon Cowden Peddercord and husband Timothy of Austin; Caran Cowden Martin and husband Douglas of Grant Pass, Oregon. Two great-grandchildren, Hunter Douglas Martin of Grant Pass, Oregon; Jessica Martin Sharp and husband William of Roy, Washington and one great-great-granddaughter, Brooklynn Meredith Sharp of Roy, Washington. She was a past member of Minuet Club, Midland Country Club, Racquet Club, Petroleum Club, Junior League, Eldorado Country Club and Vintage Club, Palm Desert, CA. Evelyn was an avid golfer and exerciser, loved to grow orchids and travel around the world. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. The family would like to thank Essie Rean Holden for her 68 years of service to Evelyn. Kind Keepers caregivers, especially Jan Otho, along with Rebecca, Martha and all the other caregivers who took care of Mrs. Cowden in her later years. Also the First Presbyterian Church for their thoughts and gifts, and her long time office employees, Marilyn Schwalmkrug and Bob Beck. Graveside service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 12, 2011 at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
