Georgia Louise DeBose “Georgie” Holland passed into the arms of her loving Father April 7, 2015 at Manor Park at the age of 95. She was born September 9, 1919 in Shreveport, Louisiana to father, Louis McGough DeBose and mother, Blanche Evelyn Rains DeBose. She graduated from Grand Bayou High School in Grand Bayou, Louisiana and attended Louisiana State University for two years. She was preceded in death by her husband Archie Leon Holland, Jr. and son Archie Leon Holland, III.
When Archie, Jr. returned with the rank of Major from World War II, he was employed by Gulf Oil in Wink, Texas and Georgie and Archie III joined him there. The move was quite a culture shock from her home in Grand Bayou, Louisiana, but she made the transition beautifully and Texas became her home. They later were transferred to Goldsmith, then to Ft. Worth, and in 1960 they were transferred to Midland. Georgie had played the piano for children’s Sunday School classes at Matthews Memorial Methodist Church in Ft. Worth, and then taught children’s Sunday school at St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Midland for years.
Georgie was employed for many years by Atlantic Richfield, and after retiring she and Archie, Jr. moved to San Marcos to help her son Lance establish his law practice. They enjoyed several years of attending their grandchildren’s games, birthday parties, and banquets before returning to Midland.
The joys of her life were her family, cooking, butterflies, and fishing. She once caught a five pound rainbow trout on the White River in Arkansas, brought it back to Midland, and cooked it in the dishwasher! Her shrieks of excitement while landing the fish will forever be a part of our memories, as will the looks of disbelief every time she told the story about steaming the fish in the dishwasher. Shortly after the new Lake Livingston filled, Georgie went fishing there for white bass with her brother. There being no limit, her excitement knew no bounds as she boated over 50 fish in one morning. Her excitement took a new turn when the boat drifted beneath a flooded tree, the branches of which were filled with dozens of snakes. Snakes were not one of her joys.
She is survived by her brother Louis McGough DeBose and wife Sunny Thomas DeBose of Houston; son G. Lance Holland and wife Dana Collins Holland of Midland; Granddaughter Carolyn “Niki” Holland Carman and husband Rick Carman of Newark, Texas; Grandson Daniel DeBose Holland of Midland; and Granddaughter Hayley Evelyn Holland of Abilene. She is also survived by her Great Grandchildren Caleb Carman, Kerith Carman and Kelaiah Carman; and nieces Patricia DeBose of Cave Springs, Arkansas and Dr. Jennifer DeBose of Townsville, Australia.
Funeral services under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday April 14th at the Chapel at Ellis Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Rick Carman. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park for immediate family.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Decatur Bible Church P.O. Box 1623, Decatur, Texas 76234 or St. Luke’s United Methodist Church 3011 W. Kansas, Midland, TX 79701.
The family would like to thank the loving staff at Manor Park for making her last years pleasant, and to Hospice of Midland for making her last days comfortable.
