He was born on July 14, 1941 to C.L. and Berdean Rains Stephenson Gray while on an extended trip to Stillwater, Oklahoma. He was raised in Midland where he attended South Cowden Jr High and Midland High School. After school, he attended Sul Ross State University where he graduated with a degree in mathematics. He married the love of his life, Nieta Jo DePrang on August 4, 1962.
Rod taught industrial arts at Alamo Junior High School for two years before leaving teaching for a career in construction. By trade, he was a carpenter but in reality, he was an artist. A true craftsman, Rod could take a pile of scraps and turn it into something of beauty. Telling him something could not be done he considered a challenge and was always ready to take it on. He gave his best at all times and expected the same from those around him. Rod worked in construction for 50 years all around Midland before retiring in 2005.
Rod was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout then the highest honor of Silver Beaver. He attended three National Scout Jamborees and continued to support the Scouts throughout his life. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #623. After his retirement, Rod loved to spend time making improvements to his ranch in Santa Anna, Texas until health would not allow him to do so. Then he was good at supervising others doing the work for him.
He served for 20 years on the Appraisal District Board as well as on other numerous boards donating his time and service. Rod was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and the Partners Class. He had a big heart for people and was always willing to help anyone in need.
Rod is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nieta; children Michele Hepfer and Mike Stephenson; grandchildren Justin Stephenson, Garrett Stephenson, Julie Lastoka, Kristen Hepfer, Kathe Hepfer and Katie Hepfer and two great grandchildren.
