Gladys was born on March 1, 1936 in Floydada, Texas to D.J. (Jack) and Gladys Patrick Parkey. She graduated from Floydada High School in 1953 and West Texas State University with a degree in education and journalism in 1957. She later completed her master’s degree in library science at East Texas State University. She married Richard C. Higgins in May 1957, Gladys taught school for over 20 years including Floydada and Corpus Christi. She was the librarian at Amarillo High School from 1970 to 1976. She moved to Midland in 1979 where she was employed with Tom Brown, Inc. for ten years and later with Midland Memorial Hospital until she retired. She enjoyed rooting for the Cowboys, sewing and was a voracious reader. Gladys was a member of The Rebekah Lodge and Delta Kappa Gamma. She is survived by her children Shawn Higgins of Midland, Clint Higgins of Midland, Jim Higgins of Dallas and June Higgins of Houston. She is also survived by her grandson Joshua Higgins of Midland, her sisters Patsy Skrabanek and Peggy Thornton both of College Station and her twin brother Glen Parkey of Amarillo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard Higgins and her brothers, Dewey Parkey, Bernie Parkey and Jon Parkey. Graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 17, 2011 at Floyd County Memorial Park in Floydada, Texas.
