Gene was born February 21, 1945, in Midland, Texas, to Harry Washam Sr. and Ida Elizabeth "Liz" Wolcott Washam. He graduated from Midland High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Navy. On February 17, 1968, he married Anna Louise Barrett, and together they made their home in Midland. A devoted father, Gene spent endless hours with his children in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
Gene built a career with the United States Postal Service, retiring after 34 years. Retirement didn't slow him down; he went on to work part time in security at Midland College. It is fitting that the Postal Service will be the one to bring him home.
His greatest calling may have been his service to his community. Gene joined the Midland Police Department's Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association in 1993, and two years later became a founding member of Midland's Citizens on Patrol program. Over more than three decades, he gave nearly 20,000 volunteer hours to the department and to the safety of his hometown, and he was deeply respected by the officers and volunteers who served alongside him.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Anna Louise Barrett Washam, and his parents, Harry Washam Sr. and Liz Washam.
Gene is survived by his son, W. Michael Washam, and his wife, Jennifer, of Midland; his daughter, Kimberly Castleberry, and her husband, Jim Bob, of Midland; his son, Jody Washam, and his wife, Traci, of Midland; his brother, Wes Washam, and his wife, Farrell Jean; his sister, Sue Abney, and her husband, J.R.; his grandchildren, Amanda Duley, Stephanie Washam Santo, Christopher Duley, Brendon Washam, Jamie Castleberry, Kelton Washam, Ashlyn Washam and Michael Blaine Washam; and eight great-grandchildren.
