

Joan Constance Cox, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at Ashton Medical Lodge in Midland, Texas. She was born at home in Monahans, Texas to John S. and Viola D. Cox on June 19, 1934. Joan began attending The School For The Blind in Austin, Texas when she was six years old, until her graduation in 1954. Joan continued her education at Abilene Christian College, receiving a Bachelor's degree in voice education. She returned to Monahans where she taught voice lessons for several years. Deciding to further her education, Joan received a Masters degree in Rehabilitation Education at Western Michigan University. After graduation she moved to Houston working for the State of Texas as a Rehabilitation Educator for the Visually Impaired. She transferred with the State of Texas to San Angelo in 1984. Joan was a dedicated member of the San Angelo Concho Pearl Lions Club and the American Council of the Blind Lions. Joan was an active member of the Southgate Church of Christ and the Southgate Ladies Bible Class.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, John and Viola Cox, and her brother, Jack M. Cox. She is survived by family and friends who love her and will miss her dearly. She had such a positive, inspiring impact on all who knew of her independent, loving spirit. A memorial service will be held at Southgate Church of Christ on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Southgate Church of Christ or San Angelo Concho Pearl Lions Club.
