Joan was born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 8, 1935, to the late Exelina (Mercier) and John Dove. She was a woman of deep faith, a gentle spirit, and a loving heart. Throughout her life, Joan touched those around her with her kindness, compassion, and genuine care for others. She had a gift for making people feel loved, welcomed, and valued.
After high school, Joan spent time in a convent in Rhode Island, where her faith continued to be an important part of her life. She later attended college in San Francisco, where she met the love of her life, Tom, in 1966. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, service, and love.
Joan and Tom eventually moved to Connecticut, where Joan dedicated her career to helping others as a social worker. Her compassion for people was not simply part of her profession—it was a reflection of who she was. She cared deeply about the lives of others and found meaning in being there for those who needed a helping hand, a listening ear, or a kind word.
After retirement, Joan and Tom moved to Midland, Texas, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Joan treasured her years in Midland and the people who became part of her life there. Even in the simplest moments, she found joy in connection, conversation, faith, and the company of those she loved.
Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tom Midkiff, in 2024, and her sister, Phyllis Dove.
Joan leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will continue through all who knew her. She will be remembered for her gentle nature, compassionate heart, unwavering faith, and the love she so freely gave to others. Those fortunate enough to know Joan will carry her memory with them and remember not only the life she lived, but the warmth and goodness she brought into their lives.
Her friends will celebrate her life with a viewing on Wednesday, September 30, from 5:00–8:00 p.m. at Ellis Funeral Home, with the Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 1, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church followed by a graveside committal at Serenity Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Joan’s life was a gift to those who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
