Joyce Lee Duncan Goodson went to her eternal home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 23, 2025. A beloved and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her life was marked by unwavering dedication to her family.
Joyce was born on March 1, 1938 to Jim and Lena Duncan in Knox City, Texas. The family soon moved to Lubbock, where Joyce enjoyed singing and piano, cross-stitch and needlepoint, and water ballet. She graduated from Lubbock High School and attended Texas Tech University. It was there, in 1958, that she met and fell in love with her beloved husband, Harold Goodson.
Their beautiful marriage of 42 years was filled with love, laughter and a delightful busyness while raising their four children. Harold and Joyce worked hard to make sure their children had everything they needed, plus many enrichment activities, including lessons of all kinds, sports, trips to many national parks, along with boating, fishing and skiing on Lake Meredith. And, the annual trips to Vallecito Reservoir created many cherished memories. They loved each other completely, teaching and inspiring their four children to love in the same way, with faith in Christ, truth and love as cornerstones. This enduring legacy will guide generations to come.
Joyce had an innate drive for perfection in all that she endeavored. In the 1970s, she owned and operated a custom drapery company in Amarillo, “The Window Treatment”. Her services were in high demand due to her integrity, attention to detail, talent and reputation. In 1978, after moving to Midland, TX, her creative efforts turned to what is lovingly referred to as her 5th child, “Magnificent Quilts”. After developing new techniques and designs in quilting, she taught quilting classes in Midland and joined the Midland Quilters Guild. Over the course of the next 35 years, she incorporated her techniques to create and craft 27 hand-stitched masterpieces. Many of these quilts won 1st place and Best of Show awards locally and nationally. On the international stage, her quilt “Emerald Bouquet” won First Place in People’s Choice award, and “Whig Rose Garden” was first Runner-Up. Many of her quilts were featured in books, on magazine covers and in advertisements. Several quilts were featured in museum exhibits in Washington, D.C., New York, and throughout Europe. She always knew exactly where they were on their travels, and was delighted when they were returned home safely.
Joyce was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her time on earth was marked by love, compassion, creativity, and her unwavering faith in God. Although Joyce’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of her family and friends, her memory will always be cherished.
Joyce loved spending time with her children: Cindy Karr and husband Tom, Mark Goodson and wife Cynthia, Marsha Goodson, Robin Horst and husband Dirk. She dearly loved her grandchildren: Betsy Mills, David Mills and wife Sarah, Jessica Karr, Randall Karr, Rebecca Borden and husband Austin, Alex Goodson, Dylan Goodson, Connor Goodson, Augie Munoz and wife Mariana, Logan Etter, Camille Etter, and Sarah Etter. She was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren: Vo Henson, Si Henson, Anna Mills, Sophie Karr, Ayden Borden, Asher Borden, Jade Goodson, Dean Goodson, Adrian Goodson, Finnley Goodson, and Mason Ottwell.
