June Moseley Briggs Obituary June Moseley Briggs, 79, of Midland, Texas passed away peacefully at Midland Memorial Hospital on Monday, March 18, in the presence of family, after a 17-year battle with COPD.
June was born on August 7, 1944 in Olney, Texas to Jack and Johnnie Burge. She was the second oldest of 5 children - 2 brothers and 2 sisters, Charles being the oldest. She was very close to her brother Charles growing up. They were born in the same hospital in Olney. Billy, LaNita and Jan would come later. The small family - Jack, Johnnie, Charles & June - picked up roots and moved out west, staying briefly in Big Spring. After that brief stay, Jack put his family on a bus bound for Midland while he hitchhiked. After the family settled in Midland, June grew up in typical West Texas fashion in a close-knit humble family that would later include her younger brother Billy and two younger sisters LaNita and Jan. Dirt roads, tumbleweeds, sand storms, baseball games, and drive-in theaters were the order of the day. She would go on to attend San Jacinto Junior High and Midland High. She became a huge Elvis fan, going on to collect a huge trunk full of Elvis memorabilia. After high school and a brief unsuccessful marriage to her first love, Jerry Pierce, she was working at a men's tie shop in downtown Midland called the Tie Bar when an officer with the Midland Police Department came in with a friend of his. He had been walking the beat in downtown Midland. He introduced himself to June, pointing to his friend and saying, "He's married. I'm not." In later meetings, June would fondly remember him driving up in a red convertible with a little white poodle in the front seat. Porkey Moseley had swept her off her feet. The couple would go on to marry and give the world two sons, Steve and Mike Moseley. While Porkey would go on and hold several positions with the Midland Police Department and later Midland County Sheriff's Office, eventually becoming Chief Deputy under Sheriff Dallas Smith, June worked in various secretarial positions, eventually becoming Executive Secretary to Frank Thompson, an Aggie through and through, of A.W. Thompson Drilling Company in the late 1970s. She remembered the day when a man named George W. Bush came in, introduced himself, and met with Frank Thompson. It was the heyday of the c.b. radio, and June had an appropriate handle - Tall City Girl. Being an avid fisherman and having grown up in Port Arthur, Porkey was eager to return to the coast, and Port Lavaca, Texas was the perfect place. June took a position at Rawson & Co, which provided instrumentation to all of the chemical plants in the area - Alcoa, Formosa, Union Carbide, Vistron, and Dupont. She eventually became Office Manager. Porkey would work for a short time at the Port Lavaca Police Department before moving over to Calhoun County and eventually becoming Chief Deputy under Sheriff A.P. Lacy. After Porkey passed away in 1987, June and the boys returned to Midland. It wasn't long after - sometime in 1988- when June met a dashing fellow from Oklahoma, Phil Briggs, who worked for Texaco. They married shortly after, and Texaco transferred him to Houston. June went back to work for Rawson, at the corporate headquarters in Houston. They weren't in Houston for very long before Phil passed away from a heart attack. June returned for the last time to Midland, where she spent her remaining years with family, friends, and three adorable dogs - Angel, Bows & Daisy.
She is survived by a daughter - Sharon Labrie of Waco, TX; two sons - Steve Moseley of Lovington, NM and Mike Moseley of Midland, TX; two brothers - Charles Burge of Menifee, CA and Billy Burge of Abilene, TX; and two sisters - LaNita Navarette and Jan Smith of Ruidoso, NM.
A visitation for June will be held Monday, March 25, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Ellis Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 4616 N Big Spring Street, Midland, Texas 79705. A graveside will occur Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Resthaven Memorial Park, 4616 N Big Spring St, Midland, Texas 79705.
