Leroy Stewart went home to his Savior on Wednesday, September 30, 2015. He was born December 30, 1925 in Angus, Texas to Martha McCage Stewart and Elbert Stewart. He attended schools in Corsicana and then followed a welding trade, joining a construction company building water towers and 80,000 barrel oil storage tanks. Leroy sustained an injury in his younger days preventing him from joining the armed forces. When the USS Alabama sustained damage at the Philippines, the government called out to welders, and Leroy and his family drove from Corsicana, Texas to Bremerton, Washington and restored the Alabama to service. In 1945, he moved to Midland to build Midland’s oil tanks south of the railroad. Leroy joined the City of Midland Police Force in 1949. He married Evelyn Jackson, a Southwestern Bell phone operator, in June 1950. They recently celebrated 65 years together. Soon after marrying, Leroy followed Jack Ellington to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, working there for 27 years. Leroy then went into the real estate business, staying there for 27 plus years.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of the home; two daughters, Nancy Chandler-Davis and Kay Wesson, both of Midland; three granddaughters, Brandi Geron and Staci Paglusch of Midland, and Jaimi Mueller of Seguin; and ten great-grandchildren. His parents; three sisters, Jo Sandberg, Joyce Cooley, Billie Boyd; three brothers-in-law; and one nephew preceded him in death.
