

She was born in Midland on February 19, 1925 to William Mangum Echols and Ella E. Echols. She attended school in Midland. It was in elementary school where she met the love of her life Grady L. Bennett. She was a proud graduate of Midland High School. Makie outlived most of her classmates. Makie later attended business school in Lubbock and then returned to Midland. Grady and Makie married on June 17, 1947 after he was discharged from the Navy. Grady was a Seabee during World War II in the Pacific Theater. They were married almost 50 years. Nettie loved to read, loved her family, the music of Elvis, Glenn Miller, Bennie Goodman and loved every animal she took care of. Everyone wanted to come back to be one of her pets. She was very proud to be a “Tall City Girl”.
Nettie is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Edwin Morris Echols, Ernest Neal Echols and sister, Edyth Echols Pedro.
Nettie is survived by her son, William Spencer Bennett and daughter in law Maureen T. Bennett; granddaughter, Meredith; nieces, Bonnie Spencer and husband Walter of Yuma, Arizona and Mary Adams and her husband John of Granbury, Texas and many great nieces and nephews.
She was cared for by her many cherished and beloved friends and family, especially Roberta Riley, Margaret White, and Sue Umphenour.
There will be a visitation on Sunday, February 26, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Ellis Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
