Robert was born May 3, 1929 in Utica, New York. He attended Ithaca High School. Robert married Barbara Jean Bishop at the First Christian Church in Abilene, Texas on January 4, 1960. Together they had two children, Robert William Cornell, Jr. and Debra Cornell Elmore.
He attended college where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from TCU and played on the tennis team and then received a Master of Arts from Stanford University. Robert taught for 36 years, teaching 5th and 6th graders in The Hague, Netherlands, Ithaca, New York, Antwerp, Belgium, and Midland, Texas. He was employed with MISD for 20 years and retired in 1995.
He enjoyed gardening, photography, traveling, reading, and playing, teaching, and dreaming tennis.
He began Big Tootsie Adventures in Ithaca, NY as an idea for his daughter and her friends so they would have a safe and positive summer program to attend while he was not teaching.
His creativity and unique ideas that developed out of his mind made the program the most unique experience for children that were a part of it that would count as some of the most positive memories of their lives for years.
Volunteerism, kindness, conservation, and serving the community were just some of the most important things he tried to instill in the children who attended. “It’s Nice Being Nice.”
Robert was a member of First Baptist Church of Midland, TX. He was also a volunteer with Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Citizens on Patrol, Master Gardeners, and RSVP and took care of the plants and birds at the greenhouse on the grounds of Midland College for many years.
Robert is survived by his wife Barbara of Midland, Texas; his son, Robert William Cornell, Jr. (wife Terri) of Carl Junction, Missouri and daughter Debra Cornell Elmore (husband Chris) of The Woodlands, Texas and his seven grandchildren: Ryan, Dustin, Lane, Lana, David, Daniel and Jon.
