Sarah Voncyle Warren passed from this life on Sunday morning, February 14th at Legacy Ranch in Midland, Texas, where she resided for the last few years of her life. She turned 94 in January, preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, “Jake Warren, and her daughter, Lou Anne Warren. And, she is survived by her son (Jay Warren and wife Mindy of Midland), daughter (Candy Belcik and husband Eddie Belcik of Fredericksburg), grandsons (Waylon Warren of Midland, Clay Tarter of Llano, Kyle Tarter of College Station, and Jayden Warren of Midland), one great-grandson (Cavanaugh Warren), and a myriad of nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored.
Voncyle, who was also lovingly known as Nonnie, Vonnie or Aunt Bonnie, was born in Comanche, Texas to Charlie and Myrtle Carnes. She had one brother, Kenneth Carnes, and a sister, Myrl McKee, who also preceded her in death over 2 decades ago. She left home at the age of 17 and moved to Big Lake, Texas where she met her soon-to-be husband, J.W. “Jake” Warren. She was a spunky waitress at the Park Inn and he was a roughneck. They fell in love and married in Livingston, NM in 1952. In their first year, Vonnie boasted to moving 11 times including various locations throughout Texas all the way up to North Dakota. In 1957, she had her first son – Jay Will – and shortly thereafter they settled in Midland. Then, 8 years later, her daughter Candace Myrl came along. Vonnie held a number of positions over her lifetime including MISD cafeterias for over 20 years, sometimes working two jobs at once to ensure that she and Jake were able to provide their kids with everything they needed and pretty much wanted.
Throughout her life Vonnie would often be caught saying in a number of ways that family was the most important thing in the world to her. She and Jake at various times would have parents, siblings, nieces and nephews living with them, always making sure they felt loved and taken care of, and never making anyone feel in any way a burden. She always opened her home to those in need and you could count on a delicious meal that she had slaved over, though never made it look tedious. She loved pleasing those around her, always had a kind word for anyone who needed it, never knew a stranger, and left a lasting impression on those she met. Chicken fried anything, lasagna, chocolate and coconut pies, and “Nonnie tacos” brought a smile to all who partook of them. She baked love into everything she touched.
Vonnie adored her children, attended all of their sports events (despite not being a huge sports fan), and yelled louder than anyone else in the stands for her favorite players – her kids. She was a second mom to some of her kids’ friends and formed beautiful friendships with some of their parents too, including Elsye Addy, who was a dear neighbor and friend for over 60 years.
Nonnie also doted on her grandchildren who could do no wrong in her eyes. She was never happier than when she was watching them perform in sports or theater or school functions, running after them, jumping out to scare them, making them laugh even when they were mad, tickling their feet, cooking whatever they wanted whenever they wanted it, and showering them with more love than anyone could dream possible. And, they love her right back in equal measure.
Vonnie touched so many lives in so many ways from relatives to friends to her church family at Westside Church of Christ in Midland. She will be missed by all who knew her, and it can be safely assumed that their lives were all made better by having known her.
Services are under the care of Ellis Funeral Home in Midland. Officiating minister will be Pamala Vannoy, and Pallbearers will be Vonnie’s grandsons Waylon Warren, Clay Tarter, Kyle Tarter, and Jayden Warren, and close friends of the family, Morris Vannoy and Cecil Addy.
