Walter was born in Grady, Arkansas on August 1, 1941, to Alexander and Eula George. He served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1958-1962, stationed primarily in Alaska. He then had a long and distinguished career as the Midland downtown station manager for the United States Post Office. Walter was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. Most importantly, and above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Walter married Dolores Copeland on September 30, 1960, and they were happily married and dedicated to each other for 60 years. Walter and Dolores had two children, Kathy and Gary, who learned to love football while watching Cowboys’ games with their dad. Walter’s pride in his children’s success could be seen when he in turn became a fan of the teams of their alma maters, Baylor University and Texas A&M.
Walter drew joy spending time with his five beautiful granddaughters, who knew him as “Poppa.” Walter cherished his granddaughters and they cherished him. He was a constant in their lives, a reliable source of gentle kindness, whether he was cooking them breakfast, taking them fishing, attending their school events, helping them set out food for Christmas Eve visitors from the North Pole, or joining them in memorable trips to Disney World, Yellowstone, and the Oregon Coast.
Preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Walter is survived by his wife, Dolores; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Brian Serr; his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Carrie George; and his five granddaughters, Haley (George) Samuels and her husband Ethan, Grace Serr, Hannah George, Olivia Serr, and Sophia Serr.
Walter is also survived by his brother Jim and sister-in-law Mary George, sister Mary Furney, sister-in-law Shirley Havlik, brother-in-law Keith McClanahan, and by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved, and loved to tease.
A memorial service for the family will be held on March 11, 2021, at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Walter’s name to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Salvation Army, or MD Anderson.
