Alan Stephen Gray

He will be greatly missed by his family and all the lives that he touched.

He was born on December 16, 1947, in Omaha, NE.

He was preceded by his beloved partner and sugar, Natalie Balderson, who passed on May 13, 2022. They are happily together again.

Alan moved to Alexandria VA in 1962 and was a proud 1966 graduate of Fort Hunt High School. After moving to Richmond in the early 70s he eventually became President and COO of Interstate Construction in Richmond, where he worked for 30 plus years. He then moved on to manage several construction companies in the Southeast for Colas Corporation, eventually retiring in 2013. He was always willing to help his friends, and after the passing of Louis Smith, Alan worked at Louis Smith Construction for several years to help Louis’ son Curtis continue the business.

Alan was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins and the Nebraska Cornhuskers and rarely missed watching a game. He also enjoyed playing slot machines and the card tables, and of late, $2-$5 online sports bets. His other passions included golf, his yard and flowers, and his beloved hummingbirds and blue birds. Not much made him happier than sitting on his deck watching his birds, other than doing that with Natalie.

He leaves behind a son, Alan S. Gray Jr. "Steve" and his wife Catherine, of Round Hill, VA; his grandson, Alex Gray also of Round Hill; brother, Richard Gray of Fredericksburg, VA; sister, Linda Rayner of Charlottesville, VA; and nieces and nephews, Kristin Rayner, her daughter, Zianna, Jennifer Brown, Kelly Garder and her husband, Dave and their son, Thomas.

The family will receive friends at a celebration of life from 4p to 6p on Wednesday September 23rd at Woody’s Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Rd, Midlothian, VA 23113.
