Obituary of Alfonso Baxter Dixon
Alfonso B. Dixon, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, also known as “Dooley” to her friends and family, sadly passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024. Born in Columbia, South Carolina ,she was the daughter of George Baxter and Alfonso Baxter, wife to Dr. Leon M. Dixon Jr. Dooley graduated from Miner Teachers College then pursued a career as a teacher. Dooley embarked her teaching career in Burlington Township School System as a substitute teacher. Substitute teaching both allowed her to perform her passion for teaching and also created extra time to spend with her family. In the 1980’s-90’s shortly after Dr. Dixon retired from the military she was employed as a substitute teacher for Amelia Street School and St. Edwards Academy here in Virginia. Dooley enjoyed traveling the world with her best friend Gloria Toote. One of her more memorable trips was to Russia in 1974, formerly the Soviet Union. The trip was sponsored by Senator Rockefeller the 41st Vice President to Gerald Ford. Dooley was remembered for so many things including gardening, sewing, and especially her cooking. “Made from Scratch” cooking was her motto. People would come from miles around to eat her food. Lasagna and New York Cheesecake were her specialties. Additionally, Dooley was a tournament golfer at Fort Dix Fountain Greens where she played with and against senior officers. She has the golf trophies as proof. A very well-rounded person, whatever she put her mind to she would accomplish with “excellence”. Her most cherished attribute was her love of God. Dedicated to Christ the King Church, she sang in the choir. She was also a faithful member of Power and Prayer Church. Dooley’s dedication to Christ included witnessing, praying for and delivering food to the sick and shut in, also donating her time to the homeless. Dooley will be remembered for being hardworking, honest, sharing and a deep loyalty to her family, friends, and community. Those who, if lucky, would take a part of these attributes with them. Her love for her family and friends will be greatly missed. Rest in peace now Precious Mother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years of marriage, Dr. Leon M. Dixon Jr and her daughter, Cynthia Washington. She is survived by siblings, Joyce Artemus-Dulin, Anna St.Clair-Wade, and Antonio Baxter; children, Deborah Dixon, Carolyn Dixon, Suzanne Green and Marty Dixon; Nieces, Vivian Artemus and Joyce Redman; nephew, Christopher Artemus; Grandchildren, Lionel Knight, Maria Knight-Garcia, Erric Knight, Jasmine Betrand, Crystal McClendon, Charles Dixon, Ivan Dixon, Edmond Dixon, and Antonio Baxter; Great Grandchildren, Essence Dalton, Destiny Dalton, Isabella Knight, Alexander Knight, Killian Bowman, Myra Dixon, Jemel Dixon, Leah Dixon, Jacques Bertrand; family friend and caregiver, Laverne Turner, who is not only a beloved family friend but a devoted caregiver that stayed by Alfonso Dixon’s side for 10 years.
