One of the by-products of a special friendship is having knowledge of and a relationship with their family. Through my friend, Marilyn, the privilege of knowing Alice Vess came to me.  Her smile was what I noticed first.  It brightened any room because the warmth and light came through her eyes. Looking at the photo memories, her smiling face is everywhere but most clear when her arms are around her beloved family.  
Alice's life had several chapters and the longest one and I'm sure her favorite was the years she brought her children into the world and gave them what my friend has said many times was, a "perfect childhood". 
Alice drew my family into her circle and we received cards full of good wishes over many years. This measure of thoughtfulness was a generous gift. 
My best memory is a lighthearted one.  Other memories related her love of games and competition. Marilyn told me that, at first,  Alice joined in the games at her residence but had to give up Scrabble. The other players were making up their own rules to cheat.  After numerous frustrating attempts to straighten them out, she had no choice but to move on. Lowering her standards was out of the question. 
May her family find comfort knowing that she's in that better place where everyone is playing by the rules.


“Mom #2” - Thank you for being my second mother for my entire life. You always had my back but never ratted me out!  You were so proud of each and every member of  your entire family and I treasure the fact you considered me an extended part of them.  I will miss you.   Love Robin. 

Mom, you have been a good friend and great mother.
You told me many times “I am only 21 years older than you”
Think I now know what you meant
You were smart, painfully honest and loveing.  You set that example for your kids and our two boys .

Grandma, I have so many wonderful memories of you. My childhood was filled with so much love and laughter because of you. I loved going over to your house and playing games, as I would lose track of time and end up going to bed late almost every time. You always had a joy about you, and it was contagious. I am sure my mom would not be who she is without you, and for that I am so grateful. I will hold the memories I have with you forever, as they are some of the best of my life. You had so much love in your heart. Thinking of you always brings a smile to my face. I was so fortunate to have you as my Grandma. You will be missed dearly.

You have closed the book on a wonderful journey.
You have celebrated your life to the end.
You have lived a good life per your own account.
 Anyone that knew you would agree you soaked up the good in life and relayed the same to your fellow man.
You have seen through your very eyes a nation grow over almost a century.
The highs and lows of absorbing such a journey made you a humble and caring person.
You have raised wonderful children into respectable adults.
I will miss our conversations of the past and the life experiences you had the privilege to experience.
Your legacy is your family. 
I am proud to be part of it.

Our favorite memory with grandma great would probably be at her house playing Bunco and watching the Game Show Network. She always stored a bunch of loose dimes in a large metal container and she'd pour some out to play. She never let us cheat and always said, "Baby needs new shoes!" We would sit with her for a long time entranced by Million Dollar Pyramid and Jeopardy. We will always remember her for her playful nature and her hardened spirit. May you rest in peace, we will see you again someday.

Grandma, I just don't really know what to say. I started this out thinking I had it all mapped out in my head, like I always do. But to my surprise, you have me speechless. All I think about when it comes to you, is playing games late at night with you and Kris (he was always a sore loser, but don't tell him I said that). I remember you letting me sleep in your bed staying up to watch Johnny Carson on the little TV. I never could see over you and you made me sleep on the far side of the bed :)
However, the games were a hoot! You NEVER let us win. That is the biggest thing I learned from you. Fight until the very end keep your eye on the prize. Nothing worth having comes easy.
Well, you  certainly fought all the way to the end and I believe you won... As you said, you lived a great life! Thank you for all you did to make me the person I am today. You were a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. You contributed so much to all of our lives and we will forever hold tight to those lessons and memories and make you proud.

Rest in peace Mom . I love you very much.  You were the best mom a kid could ask for. You will be truly missed.

All the times I can remember with you, I will never forget and I know neither will you.  Thankyou for everything you’ve shared with me.

To My Special Mother.......

Mom,  thank you for loving all four of us so dearly.  Thank you for teaching us what's important in life and what is not!  I know the difference.  I don't know if I have measured up to the sweet love you gave to each and every one of your children but you taught me to love deeply and to be the best at something.  For you and for me it was about children.  I am blessed to have Kristofer and Scott in my life.  If I'm half the mother you were to us, I'm truly blessed.

I will miss you Mom but know we will be together and laugh again one day!

I will always remember the rocking chair at the front door of your house, while I waited to see Marilyn . That chair now sits in my house with fond memories . I will always love you. You were my second Mom and I’m proud to be your adopted son. Rest In Peace Mom.
