Avery Neriah Nora, the first-born son of Neriah and Elcelia Nora, was born on the sunny island of Trinidad on August 2nd 1971. When his parents migrated to the United States in 1974, Avery and his brother Nigel, lived with their grandmother Esther Nora for three years. In 1977 Avery and Nigel also migrated to the U.S. to join their parents and their sister, Roxanne in Brooklyn NY.
Avery’s parents believed in Christian education. He attended the Flatbush Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School, Northeastern Academy, Oakwood College, (now Oakwood University) and Atlantic Union College. While living in Brooklyn, he attended the Flatbush Seventh-day Adventist church with his family and later on Shiloh and Kingsboro SDA Churches. He loved the word of God and studied Theology in college. Actively involved in church, he did numerous presentations and patiently helped others to understand the gospel of Jesus. Avery also loved computer technology and animation graphics. He wanted to create a bible-based animation program for children.
Jovial, energetic, bursting smile, hearty laugh, lit up the room, are just some of the phrases used to describe Avery’s personality when he was feeling just great. No doubt his three sons Charis, Kodesh and Xavier exhibit those same traits. He loved his siblings and as a young boy could always be counted to defend his brother Nigel who always seemed to get in trouble on the playground. He was also protective of his sisters Kathy and Roxanne, and treated them like the ladies’ gentleman that he was. He loved to sing and was always the loudest during family worship. At church he was no different. He sang with his children’s choir, youth choir, and various singing groups at church & school including Kings Messengers, Legacy, and Voices of Harmony.
He married his childhood friend Charlene Dyer on May 16, 1999. His family was very important to him and it showed as he loved and cared for his wife and children. His ambition was to raise his sons to know Jesus, to have a personal relationship with Him and to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives.
His characteristic attitude of honesty, integrity and hard-work followed him wherever he went. He received a reward of excellence in 2008 from the Bon Secours Richmond Health System in Materiel Management.
In 2005, Avery and his family relocated to Richmond, VA. They were members of Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church and later Faith Landmarks Ministries.
When Avery developed cancer, it was devastating to him and the family. During the year Avery fought the real fight of faith. Standing on the WORD and believing that ALL GOD's promises are YES and AMEN. He passed away on October 2, 2011, with his wife at his side.
Left with fondest memories of Avery: wife - Charlene, children - Charis, Kodesh & Xavier; parents - Neriah & Elcelia; grandmother - Esther; Siblings - Kathy, Nigel & Roxanne; Mother-in-law - Felicia, Brothers-in-law - Kenrick & Shane; Sisters-in-law - Wilnelsia & Shevonne, seven aunts, three uncles, a host of cousins, four nieces, three nephews and numerous friends, church family and colleagues.
Father's Day 2011, Avery received an iPad as a gift and immediately began using it to study the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit and receive his miracle. He said, "Make much of GRACE and the Kingdom" Romans 5:21. Avery loved to quote the text, 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18:- For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests all acts of kindness be made into donations for the children at Bank of America, 435027180853.
