Betty Camden Palmer

Betty Doyle Camden Palmer, 89, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mentor, and friend, passed into eternity on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Betty lived a life filled with love, laughter, grace, and perseverance. She embodied the Proverbs 31 ideal - a woman of quiet strength, faith, and dignity, with an unwavering dedication to her family. Those who knew her will remember her beauty, her love of humor and her quick, joyful laughter that brightened every room she entered. Betty's gentle wisdom and sweet kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew her, and she was deeply loved by everyone whose life she touched.

Born in Pulaski, VA, in 1937, to James and Lois (Walke) Doyle, Betty was the second of three children, including her older brother, Bobby, and her younger brother, Jack. Betty spent her early childhood in Pulaski until the late 1940's when she moved to the Richmond area where she spent the rest of her life.

Shortly after graduating from John Marshall High School in 1955, Betty met and fell in love with a young Navy pilot, Wallace Camden. Wally and Betty courted for about a year until they married and subsequently moved to Norfolk where Wally was stationed. Betty and Wally welcomed their first three children, Jeff, Carol, and Terri, while living in Norfolk, followed by two more daughters, Kim and Jill, after their move back to Richmond in 1965, not too long after Wally completed his naval career.

Devoted parents, Betty and Wally built their home in Bon Air where they raised their five children, were active in the community, boated and camped for recreation with their family and friends, until Wally's unexpected passing in 1983, after 28 years of marriage. Betty persevered and saw that her last two daughters successfully completed their education while she herself was "lucky in love" a second time.

In 1985, Betty married a wonderful man, Howard Palmer, a widower himself. Howard and his wife had been longtime friends of Wally and Betty. Howard, like Wally, was a custom home builder and they enjoyed both a professional and social relationship for many years. When both Howard and Betty were widowed, love blossomed between the two and wedding bells rang.

With their nine children between them raised, Betty and Howard built a home on 50 acres in Powhatan, VA, where they owned and boarded horses. Very busy with the "horse farm", Betty also assisted Howard in his successful home building business, was an active member of Bon Air Christian Church, raised funds and supported charitable events, joined a social group of women lovingly known as the "Golden Girls", who became life-long friends, and began to welcome grandchildren.

After almost ten years of a very happy marriage, Howard's health unfortunately declined. Betty was sadly widowed a second time after lovingly caring for Howard during his lengthy battle with melanoma. She was heartbroken but continued to manage their home and horse farm until 1995 when she chose to downsize and move to the west end of Richmond. She lived happily and independently for many years until suffering a debilitating sixth stroke in 2022, at age 85.

She was left wheelchair bound and paralyzed on her left side, but with an optimistic and kind disposition despite her physical limitations.

Betty went to live at Spring Arbor Assisted Living of Salisbury, in Midlothian, in June 2023. She delighted in the variety of daily activities and gained many friends and admirers because of her sunny but humble disposition. Indeed, she was awarded the resident "Most Likely to Brighten Your Day" because she was so endearing and quick to laugh despite her challenges. Her attitude was truly inspirational and many of the caregivers and staff lovingly referred to her as "Mama" because of the love and concern she had for them.

All of Betty's children remained devoted to her happiness and well-being in the final four years of her life. They ensured not a single day passed that she didn't have a family member, or a loving friend, visit her for several hours to socialize, tend to any particular needs she had, and join her during her favorite activities, including water color painting, bingo, and, of course, happy hour! Betty was truly loved beyond measure.

She is survived by her five adoring children, son Jeff Camden (Joyce), daughters Carol Goodloe (John), Terri Neilson (Tuffy), Kim Eastman (Eddie Jordan), and Jill Camden, her nine beloved grandchildren, Brittney, Brock, Jake, Camden, Derek, Kelli, Makenzi (Brandon), Colter (Emily), and Jack, her three great-grandchildren, Nico, Wilder, and Scout, and a wide circle of family and friends who will treasure her memory and carry her love in their hearts forever.

The family invites all who were touched by Betty's kindness to attend her Celebration of Life Service on August 6, 2026, at 1 :00 PM, at Manakin Episcopal Church, 985 Huguenot Trail, Midlothian, 23113. A light reception in Betty's honor will follow immediately after the service at Salisbury Country Club, 13620 W Salisbury Road, Midlothian, VA, 23113.

Betty will be profoundly missed, but her legacy of love, faith, beauty, and joy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She has now entered the joy of her Lord, where love and laughter know no end.
