With broken hearts, we share that Bobby Thomas Thekkekandam, of Midlothian, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 15, 2025, aged 46. The family is shocked and deeply saddened by his sudden passing.
Bobby was preceded in death by both sets of his grandparents. He is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Janine; their children, Lex and Ryan; his parents, Matthew and Elizabeth; his sister, Betsy Devarakonda; and his brother-in-law, Sunil Devarakonda. In addition, his memory lives on with his many cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, extended family, and many friends.
Born on September 5, 1978, Bobby grew up in Greensboro, N.C. In his childhood, he forged close bonds with his cousins which endure to this day. Most pictures of Bobby from childhood capture him making a silly face for the camera—a sign that his legendary sense of humor started at a young age.
After high school, Bobby attended North Carolina State University and became a devoted fan. He served as president of his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, where he met his closest friends. One of his greatest joys was cheering the Wolfpack on in person at the 2024 ACC Tournament during their magical run to the Final Four. At NC State he also met Janine, whom he married in 2005.
Family was the center of Bobby’s life. To anyone who knew him, but especially to those closest to him, Bobby was a friend, defined by his patience, stability, and non-judgmental spirit. He was also wickedly funny, a trait passed on to his children after hearing years of Dad-jokes.
Bobby lived life fully. A skilled musician, he enjoyed life-long hobbies of playing guitar and attending live music. For Bobby, it was a point of pride that as a young child, Lex had memorized some of his favorite songs. In addition, Bobby enjoyed adventure and embraced it wholeheartedly with family, from skiing to traveling the world.
Above all, Bobby was the most amazing husband, father, son, brother, and friend.
His life will be celebrated on at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to METAvivor, an organization supporting metastatic breast cancer research and awareness, a cause close to his heart.
