Carol Elizabeth Handley, born on August 15, 1947, passed away at the age of 72 on June 30th, 2020. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, William Robert Handley and her two children Matthew Robert Handley (Kerrianne) and Kelly Elizabeth Tull (Benji). She will be greatly missed by her loving grandchildren Katelyn Ann Handley (13), Kimberly Elizabeth Handley (10), Annabel Elizabeth Tull (6), and Zuzu Elizabeth Tull (3). She is also survived by her two nieces Elizabeth Meister and Christine Armstrong.
Carol was born in Kansas City, MO to Leroy and Lucille Armstrong joining her two brothers George and Graham Armstrong. She spent many vacations at the Ozarks with her extended family and excelled academically in school. Carol attended Emporia State College and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She graduated with honors with a degree in Computer Science and was part of a group of women who were in the forefront of computer programming.
She met Bill on a blind double date at a Mets game in 1970 in New York City. They were married on July 1st, 1972 and honeymooned in Bermuda. Matthew was born on March 7th, 1975 and Kelly on December 14, 1977 in the middle of an ice storm. After spending a few years in Yorktown, New York the family moved to their current home in Midlothian, Virginia.
Carol was active at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and going on mission trips including a trip to South Carolina to help the clean-up efforts after Hurricane Hugo. She really enjoyed Saturday Family Nights and being her children’s biggest cheerleader in the sports that Matthew and Kelly played. She was often heard shouting encouragement from the stands during basketball or track events.
Carol was a kind and compassionate friend and co-worker who loved to travel. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, encourager, hard-worker and will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home 1020 Huguenot Road Thursday, July 9th at 11am.
