CHARLES, Carol Smith, died last Friday afternoon after a valiant battle with a long-term illness. She was the widow of Louis "Buck" St. Charles; and was predeceased by her stepson, Ray St. Charles. She is survived by her son, Eliot Daughtry and his spouse, Kriss De Jong; daughter, Sandra Guyer and her husband, Kevin; stepson, Donald St. Charles and his wife, Dorene; stepdaughter-in-law, Bonnie St. Charles Cleary; and stepdaughter, Catherine Rousseaux and her husband, Michael. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Morgan, Mara and Alec Guyer, Louis "Trip" St. Charles, Derek Brazel and Travis St. Charles and Alexandra and Madeline Rousseaux.
After growing up in Charlotte and Raleigh, Carol graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She was one of the first women to receive a degree in Medical Technology. She moved to Richmond in 1972 and worked for McGuire VA Medical Center in the chemistry lab for 37 years. More than anything else, Carol enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and friends. She loved going to the beach with her Bridge group, taking photographs, and was a voracious reader. Prior to her illness, she was also active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 31. All that knew her will miss her intelligence and willingness to help anyone in need. A memorial service will be announced later in the summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to Virginia Blood Services.
