Charles Parke Word Jr.

Charles P. Word, Jr. was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 24, 2023. He was born on March 2, 1936 in Richmond, Virginia to Charles P. and Naomi Y. Word. He is preceded in death by his father, 1953, mother, 1990 and sister, Barbara Jane Weeks, 1987. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Agnes Short Word, daughter, Elizabeth Mattingly (Stephen), sons, David (Donna) and William (Tina) Word. Also 4 grandchildren, Joshua (Michelle) and Hannah Mattingly, and Parke (Lindsay) and Nathan (Hannah) Word. 10 great-grandchildren, Barbara, Catherine, Stephen, Molly, Emily, Mary and Quinn Mattingly, Audrey and Sophie Word, Emma MacKnight, and sister, Mary Norbeck (Eskel). A special thanks to his wonderful wife who played the major part in raising their family. He was so proud of all of them.

Charles graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1954 and the University of Richmond in 1958 and 1965. During his working career he served in many capacities including Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration at Babcock-Phillips Co., Dean of Finance and Administration at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and Director of Fiscal Services at the Supreme Court of Virginia. He retired from the Supreme Court in 2001.

He attended Immanuel Baptist Church and met his soon to be wife in 1957, a young lady who had come to Richmond to work after graduating from high school. As a longtime member, he served in many capacities and was a Trustee for 44 years.

Taking vacations, camping, and trips were a very special time for him to enjoy being with his family and doing things together. Attending his children's/grandchildren's events over the years meant so much to him.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2pm on November 29, 2023 at Immanuel Baptist Church, 3601 Monument Ave. Richmond, VA. Visitation with family will begin 1 hour before the service.
