Born September 12th, 1940 in Aurora, Indiana to his parents, Mildred Havens & Jesse Monroe. He graduated high school in Elkhart, IN where his father was an elementary school principal and his mother a teacher. Following high school he got his Bachelors of Industrial Engineering & Masters of Science in Information Assurance from Purdue University. He was proud to be a Boilermaker and an avid fan of their basketball team.
His early career as Vice President at Harris Graphics moved him and his family to many places and brought them to New England in the late 1980’s. A leap into entrepreneurship brought him and his wife to Arizona, and retirement brought him back to the east coast, settling in Midlothian, Virginia to be closer to family.
He loved to sail (bringing his daughters on week-long boat trips), flying his Cessna plane, race cars, golfing and fishing. This last year he got to race his brother in an Indy car around the Richmond race track and received a HAM radio license. He will be remembered for his faith in God, love of family, service to those around him and his amazing baby back ribs.
His legacy of helping and bringing joy to others will continue on through all of his family- his bride of 59 years, Diana Monroe, brother Kit Monroe & wife Marsha, sister-in-law Barbara Young, daughters- Paige Marquardt & husband Eric, Lara Nichols & husband Prescott, and Michelle Monroe Rowan & husband Patrick, his grandchildren he was incredibly proud of and always cheering on- Payten & Gavin Moody, Noah & Kendall Nichols, Julia Marquardt, and Hannah Jayne Rowan, and his grand-dogs and buddies- Scout, Aspen, Quinn, Maisy, Chester and Penny.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 11551 Lucks Ln, Midlothian, VA 23114 on Saturday, November 25th from 1-3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, if you would like to contribute to the mission of others, donations can be made to one of organizations Dennis loved to support: The Special Olympics of Virginia.
