She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Kurt K. Ulmer, and her sister Ruth Zuccala. Edith is survived by her two daughters Holly Ulmer, and Cheryl Layton (Michael Layton).
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, her family attended the Dutch Reformed Church of South Bushwick where Edith was a young soprano soloist and taught Sunday School. At age 12, Edith’s mother enrolled her in the State School of Music where she learned how to play the violin. Edith performed and was a soloist in many orchestra concerts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. For four years she was concertmaster of the orchestra under Director Charles Brown Cacioppo, also her violin teacher.
During high school, Edith worked after school at the Brooklyn Public Library, and then at Chase National Bank on Pine Street in Manhattan for 8 years, starting as a Page and then as a Statistical Typist.
After Edith married Kurt Ulmer, the couple moved to Jackson Heights, Queens and later to East Northport, Long Island where they raised their two daughters Holly and Cheryl. The family attended the Greenlawn Presbyterian Church where Edie taught Sunday School. Later she served both as an Elder, and Chair of the Board of Deacons for the First Presbyterian Church of Northport, New York.
When her children were young, Edith was a classroom mother, a Girl Scout Leader, and Vice President and Treasurer of the PTA. Later on, she worked as a Library Assistant for the School District, and a Library Clerk for the East Northport Public Library.
Edie and Kurt lived out their retirement years in Midlothian, Virginia.
Music, art, and reading were Edie’s special joys. Appreciating beauty touched her soul. Since age 7 Edie had a special talent for drawing and painting and was mostly a self-taught artist who painted in oils creating beautiful seascapes, landscapes, flowers, and portraits. While living at Elmcroft Senior Living, she held an exhibit of her paintings which brought joy to the community there. Edie also loved to dance and going on beach vacations with her family.
Edie will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her infectious laugh, and her sparkling and engaging outgoing personality. She was a bright, cheerful, talented, warm, encouraging, deeply loving and faithful wife, mother, and friend. Her Christian faith played prominently in her life, and she richly blessed others through her love, caring, and beautiful soul.
