

CANTER, Dr. Hall Gibbons, 85, born February 26, 1929, in Harrisonburg, Va., to Dr. Noland M. Canter and Mary Virginia Yancey Canter, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, in Midlothian, Va., with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha Hardy Canter; son, Hall Canter, Jr. (Angela); daughter, Martha Canter Zahler (Tom); daughter, Grace Canter Valentine (Nuno); his beloved grandchildren, Callie, Sadie, Haylie, Jesse, Audrey, Matthew, Mackenzie, Kaitlyn, Thomas, Alexandra and Elizabeth; his great grandson, Jaden; his brother, Harry Canter and his wife, Floride; sister-in-law, Eleanor Canter; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Dr. Canter was preceded in death by his daughter, Jean Hardy Canter; and his brother, Dr. Noland Mackenzie Canter, Jr. Dr. Canter graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1950 and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1954. From 1954-1957, he served in the United States Army in the medical corps achieving the rank of captain. From 1957-1994, he was an admired pulmonologist and professor at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Canter was an active member of Fairlington United Methodist Church in Alexandria, Va. and a faithful member of the church choir for over 50 years. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2015 at National Memorial Park, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, Va. 22042, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at Fairlington United Methodist Church, 3900 King Street, Alexandria, Va. 22302. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be sent in memory of Hall Canter, M.D., to the Georgetown University School of Medicine Scholarship Fund, 3300 Whitehaven Street, NW, Ste. 4000, Washington, D.C. 20007.
