Herbert David Hendricks of Moseley, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 12, 2026, at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Jean Snyder Hendricks; his parents, Fred and Melva Hendricks; and his eight siblings. His legacy lives on through his daughter, Barbara Bogdanowicz, and her husband, James; his son, David L. Hendricks, and his wife, Nancy; his grandchildren, David Hendricks Jr., Lindsay Hendricks, Kathryn Bogdanowicz, and Jamie Sheasby; and his great-grandchildren, Blake and Deacon Hendricks, and Alexander and Sophia Sheasby.
Born in Jamestown, New York, Herb was the seventh of nine children and the older twin to his brother, Robert. Raised by a Free Methodist minister in the northern New York region, Herb grew up with a strong foundation of faith and family. He earned his degree in mathematics, attending both Roberts College and Greenville College, before proudly serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he built a successful career as an aerospace engineer with North American Aviation and the Boeing Aircraft Corporation, ultimately retiring in 1988.
Herb was a devoted husband to his college sweetheart, Jean. Friends and family will forever picture the two of them holding hands, walking side by side as they did most of their lives. A loving father, Herb always made time to share adventures with his family. He served as a Scoutmaster for his son’s troop, leading them on memorable fifty-mile hikes during the summers. Herb was also the family's enthusiastic travel planner. Together, he and Jean visited every U.S. state and capital more than once, explored over 70 countries across six continents, and embarked on more than 50 ocean and river cruises. Closer to home, he enjoyed reading, golfing, bowling, and lifting his voice in the church choir.
A dedicated Christian who gave his life to the Lord at a young age, Herb served his church tirelessly. Over the years, he took on many leadership roles, including worship leader, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, Bible study leader, Elder, and Trustee. He knew countless hymns by heart. He joyfully pursued his goal of remaining an active member of the choir at Swift Creek Presbyterian Church in Moseley until his passing.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Swift Creek Presbyterian Church in Moseley, Virginia.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Woody’s Funeral Home, located at 1020 Huguenot Road in Midlothian, Virginia.
