Jack was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 27, 1934. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Christian Moehling; his mother, Norma Carrie Moehling (Holmes); his sisters, Volley Betty Hogg and Joan Wilson; his wife, Delores Moehling (Haerr); and his nephew, George Hogg.
During his formative years, Jack attended Onarga Military School from 1948 until his graduation in 1952. While there, he was an active member of the basketball, track, and football teams. In his senior year, he was recognized as the cadet who best represented the true spirit of OMS athletics through his performance and sportsmanship. Following graduation, Jack enlisted in the Army and served for two years. After completing his military service, he attended Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, fulfilling his mother’s dream of becoming the first in the family to earn a college degree.
Jack married Delores Haerr while in college and they welcomed their first son, Jack Jr in Bloomington, Illinois. After graduating he accepted a job that took him to Mobile, Alabama where his second son, Eric, was born. He then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where his third son, Jeffrey, was born. Jack began his career in the furniture business in 1964 with Broyhill Furniture Industries. It was here that he found his true calling, he loved the industry. As a traveling salesman in Florida from 1964 to 1967, he was then promoted to National Sales Manager, moving his family to Lenoir North Carolina, where he led the sales and merchandising departments for Broyhill until 1979. In 1979 he left his position with Broyhill and partnered with his friend and coworker Larry Waggoner to start Hickory Manor Furniture Manufacturing in Taylorsville NC. The business lasted only 3 years before failing, Jack lost it all including his marriage.
Undeterred, Jack moved to Midlothian, Virginia, to start a new life. Here he married his second wife, Sherry Moehling (Porch) and welcomed a daughter, Christine, to the family. In 1982, Jack started an independent furniture sales company, representing fast-growing manufacturers such as Benchcraft Upholstery and Ashley Furniture Industries. Hard work and discipline served him well; sales increased and Jack was honored by Ashley Furniture with Salesman of the Year several times. He also became a friend and trusted advisor to the owners. As sales exploded Jack brought his sons into the company: Jack in 1988, Jeffrey in 2002 & Eric in 2004. Working with his sons was a great source of pride for him. Jack's career culminated in 2002 as a partner with his sons in Fairway Partners LLC, which opened the 1st Ashley Branded HomeStore in Virginia and went on to open a total of 4 in the Richmond, Virginia area. The stores were sold in 2014 and Jack took a much-deserved retirement.
In his personal life, Jack found his greatest joy in time with family. He especially enjoyed golf with his friends. Competitive by nature, he was always a steady and dependable partner in any contest. He is admired not only for his work ethic and sound judgment, but also for the warmth of his humor and the consistency of his character.
Jack is survived by his devoted partner of 10 years, Mary Lou Boerner, with whom he lovingly embraced the phrase "Forever Young" every day.
