Dear Charters family,
I’m heartbroken by the recent news about James, and wanted to say I’m so sorry for your loss. I didn’t knew James that well, but he was in my 6th grade math class. I remember James was extremely smart and kind. He would always raise his hand to answer or ask questions, help other students, and most importantly just be nice to people. I, and many others, will never forget how lovable, clever, and sweet he was.

James was a really good friend to me. We would laugh at each other’s jokes and have fun in the classroom. He was way more intelligent than me, since I was a average learner In middle school. We both wanted to go to VT. James, I’ll miss you and I’ll remember the really fun times we had. I will go to tech and finish it all in honor of you.

James came to the OA induction weekend with a cast on his arm. During the weekend he was required to sleep under the stars and to perform cheerful service. Even with a hurt arm he was cheerful throughout the entire weekend. When it came time to get ready for the ceremony I told him he didn't have to wear the scout dress shirt because of the cast. He smiled and said he was ok. His friends helped him get ready and off they went. 

He will really be missed by all of us. 

I remember James from his time in my advanced math class at J. B. Watkins Elementary.  He was a sweet child and a joy to teach.  I am so very sorry for your loss and my  thoughts are with yall at this terrible time in your lives.

We will miss you Bubba.  Our hearts are broken but our love is strong.  You will never be forgotten.

I went to high school with George and his sister Wendy. They were like siblings to me. We’ve been in touch off and on through the years, always keeping up with each other’s goings on. 
I was heart broken to learn earlier this week of James’ passing. I didn’t know him personally, but from the comments left by loved ones, he sounded like a great kid. To George, Jessica, and Julia, keep his memory close and he’ll be with you always. Know that the Deep Creek community is praying for you all during this difficult time.

From Ian Ogden, a thought from a younger Boy Scout in the troop and a 6th grader at Midlo:

 I remember when I was doing track and field tryouts this winter. I am not the fastest runner. During the mile James was the first one to cheer me on and encouraged me to finish so James thanks and I will always remember you from Ian.

James was a kind and respectful young man that was always willing to help someone. He was one of the scouts you did not have to watch too closely because he took care of his business well.

James was also brave and tough. On our trip to West Virginia last summer, he was doing stunt-like dives off inflatables into a lake. At one point he landed wrong and got the wind knocked out of him. It shell shocked him for a few minutes and I got a little concerned, but he shook it off and went right back at it.  He wasn't about to miss out on the fun with the other scouts.

To the Charters family, we pray God will give you peace and comfort remembering your time with James.


James was one of the Senior Patrol Leaders on a recent BSA outing  where I was one of the adult leaders. He did an exceptional job organizing the scouts, delegating duties and most importantly taking on the responsibility of leadership without hesitation or complaint. In my opinion, he was an exemplary scout and will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

When James joined Troop 876 as a Bacon Eagle, he blessed our lives forever.  We were the recipients, every Tuesday, of his laughter, smile, jokes, and kindness.  James would go out of his way to make sure everyone was taken care of - if you needed something, James was on it!  At one of the Troop Christmas parties, James received the faux fur hat which we had given to the gift exchange.  He thought it was hilarious!  He wore it to Winter camp, too, I believe.  When he wiped out on the Mountain Biking Campout, he was so brave!  He even joked around with us while waiting for help to arrive.  I will forever cherish these times I had with James.

Please accept our deepest sympathy in your loss. James was a model young man for scouting. It was an honor to know him. When I think of James, this photo of him in the Golden Spoon Competition comes to mind. He was very involved in the troop and will truly be missed.

Dear Charters family - We can't begin to tell you how very sad we  are to hear of James' passing.  James was one of those scouts, who not only knew the Scout Oath and Law early on, but lived it every day.  His smile when he saw you, his greeting you by name, and his holding the door open for you, spoke of his fine upbringing by two parents who loved him dearly. Me and James had always been friend since he moved to VA in 4th grade. We had fun in school and cubscouts together. We had big dreams back then of owning our own company together where we make and sell games. Few years later we are challenging each other to make it through the ranks in scouts. I will always miss James but I won't forget him.

James was one of the first people I knew in 6th grade, and though we drifted throughout the years he was an amazing friend and a wonderful student. He had a vibe that just made any situation better and always was kindhearted to others. I’m horribly sorry for your loss, and I wish you all the best of luck for the upcoming future.

     James was always a great friend towards myself and everyone around him. I remember walking into mustang morning and being able to have a laugh and joke around with him for a bit before the day had started. Dear Charters family,

James was in my 6th grade English class, and I will always remember his sweet smile and sweet face.  He was a kind and gentle student who brightened my day.  I had him 5th period, and enjoyed having such a sweet boy to end my day with. James always had a way of having a quiet presence in my class.  He wasn't loud or talkative, but his presence alone added a positive vibe to the room. 
I will always remember James and his gentle spirit.

Dear Charters Family,
My twin daughters, Harper and Hunter Durrette had classes with James at Midlothian Middle School. All three of us are deeply saddened by his passing. Though the girls did not know him well,  they remember him as an accomplished wrestler and kind and sensitive young man. Hunter talked to him once about how her older sister Paige had cheered at his wrestling match one day. Harper remembers him in her gym rotation and how he had a group of guys he hung out with.  He will not be forgotten by us. Talking about his life, and the loss of it, makes us want to go and be kinder and more loving to every person we come into contact with. I am praying for your comfort and peace.
