Obituary of Jayne Hawpe Dewey
Dewey, Jayne Hawpe, 92, of Richmond, daughter of the late Erskine and Edith Hawpe of Rockbridge County, VA, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband L.J. Dewey; her brother Kemper Hawpe; and her son Eric Dewey. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Dewey; her daughter-in-law Lynn Dalton; her four grandchildren--Derek Cathcart, Raynie Cathcart, Amber Dewey and Kelly Dewey; her niece Barbara Lewis (Brian) and family; and her nephew Mark Hawpe (Joyce). Jayne graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton and attended Longwood College. She moved to Richmond and worked as a secretary for several firms. Her favorite job was working for John Pearsall, Jr. as a legal secretary. She moved to Florida for a year of sun and fun before returning to Richmond where she met her husband L.J. She and L.J. were married on October 29, 1960 and bought a home in Bon Air. L.J. sadly passed away at age 61 in 1988. Jayne continued to live in the Bon Air home until 2013 when she moved to The Virginian. This was soon after her beloved son, Eric, passed away. Her surviving family and friends will miss her feisty nature, her keen wit, her foresight, and her love for her family. She enjoyed classical music, the beach, cruises, and the Fall foliage. She reminded us to "read the labels" and was always ahead of her time on medical and environmental issues. She had a beautiful voice and was an avid reader and sports fan. She supported a number of charities and adopted a youth baseball team in Chester. She will be truly missed. A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens on June 9th at 2 pm with a celebration of life afterwards. In lieu of flowers, her favorite charities were Doctors Without Borders and the Nature Conservancy.
