Jean Crews Ridgeway

She is survived by her son Jay, and daughter in-law Lea as well as her sister and brother-in-law Patsy & Andy Nuckols.

Jean was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia to J.B. and Ruby (Clay) Ridgeway. In high school, she met the love of her life, James (Jim) Ridgeway. Lifelong sweethearts, they were married on December 19, 1959. In 1961, they moved to Chesterfield County. Jean began working as a teacher in Chesterfield County Public Schools. In 1987, she opened Evergreen Elementary, a “Lighthouse” award winning school and became the Principal. She then later went on to open Bettie Weaver Elementary School. Jean definitely loved her job. But if for some reason she hadn’t become a teacher, she likely would’ve pursued a career in fashion. Jean always took care to look her best. She loved bright colored, stylish apparel and anything with a bit of sparkle caught her eye. But truly, she had an absolute passion for education. To her, school was never just a building; it was a community, a safe haven, and a second home. Her students were of the utmost importance to her and she was dedicated to their success. Through this devotion, she had a real and positive impact on so many lives. She will be remembered for going the extra mile not only for those students, but also for their families as well as her fellow educators throughout her career.

While the final years of Jean’s life were shadowed by the challenges of dementia, she maintained her inner strength and fun loving spirit. We cherish our memories of the vibrant, witty, strong woman who helped to shape so many lives through her tireless work as an educator. We also take great comfort knowing she is now free from that cruel disease and undoubtedly reunited with her beloved husband Jim.

A Celebration of her Life will be held at 12:30 pm on Saturday September 19th at the Capital Ale House 13831 Village Place Drive Midlothian, Virginia
