

JoAnn Carothers passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 3, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester James Peresie and Winnifred Daniel, her younger brother James Michael Peresie, and her husband David Carothers. She is survived by her younger sister Judith Goodman, her younger brother Jeffrey Peresie, her son Christopher Carothers and his wife, Karen Mitchell Carothers, nephew Donald Goodman III, and other beloved family.
JoAnn was born in North Tonawanda, New York, graduated from Tonawanda High School and went on to serve in the US Air Force, where she met her beloved husband David. After leaving the military, she earned a Masters’ Degree in Library Science at the University of Maryland and spent her career as a librarian for the US Senate Library and Arlington County Public Schools. Her hobbies included reading, genealogical research, and collecting unicorns. She enjoyed traveling with her sister as well as going to science fiction conventions with her son and daughter-in-law.
The family will receive friends from 11am-12pm on July 21st, with a service to follow at 12pm conducted by clergy from St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, as it was a charity JoAnn supported generously over the years.
The family would like to thank the caring nurses at UVA University Hospital in Charlottesville, VA for their compassionate end-of-life care, as well as all who have reached out with their condolences in this difficult time.
