It is with profound sadness and hearts full of love that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother, Joan Elizabeth Rowan (Rodgers), who peacefully left this world on July 5th, 2026, at the age of 88.
Born on December 26, 1937, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Joan was the only daughter of Thomas Hunter Rodgers and Evelyn Curran Rodgers. Joan was the youngest of their three children, with two elder brothers Robert (Bertie) and Thomas Hunter (Tommy). Joan grew up in Belfast and met the love of her life Harvey while working as a bookkeeper for the Queen’s University bookstore.
A gifted gardener, Joan shared her passion for creating a beautiful garden and courtyard in Reeds Landing, Midlothian with her loving husband Hugh Harvey Rowan, whose death preceded hers in 2008. Joan and Harvey emigrated from Northern Ireland in 1968, with their young daughter Amanda and together grew their family with whom they shared their love of travel and sailing, art and literature, music and dancing, cooking and gardening. She spent her life cultivating a home defined by warmth, generosity, and joy.
Joan approached everything with quiet strength and an open heart. She had a rare talent for finding beauty in simple things. Whether she was offering wisdom, sharing a laugh, or simply baking Irish shortbread to share with friends and neighbors at Christmastime, her presence brought light to everyone who was fortunate enough to know her.
Her greatest and proudest accomplishment was her family. She is survived by her daughter Amanda Rowan Browde and her husband Stephen Carl Browde, their children Stephen William, his wife Mary Beth and granddaughter Ave Reese, daughter Sandra Elise and grandson James Brouse, her son Jeremy Harvey Rowan and his wife Stephanie Dawn, and their children Nathaniel Harvey and Daphne Elizabeth, and her youngest son Christopher Hamilton Rowan, who will carry her legacy of unconditional love forward.
A celebration of Joan’s life and a time to share our favorite memories will be held at Noon on Sunday, July 12th at Corinth United Methodist Church, 23 W. Williamsburg Road, Sandston, VA 23150. All who loved her are invited to join and celebrate a life beautifully lived. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Crater Community Hospice (CraterCommunityHospice.org), in recognition of the kindness and care that their staff showed to Joan and her family during her final days.
