He was born in Richmond on July 31,1934 to Edna and Irvin Holcombe. Calvin completed Sandston Elementary School, Highland Springs High School, and the University of Virginia; receiving the degree of Bachelor of Architecture in 1957. On the day he received his architectural degree, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army. He worked a year in a Miami architectural office before attending the Army Artillery School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma where he graduated as a Field Artillery Commander. After artillery school, Calvin returned to Richmond where he served in the Army Reserve and continued his internship as an architect. In 1962, he qualified as a Certified Architect in the State of Virginia. In 1964, he went into business for himself and practiced architecture in Richmond for over 50 years as J. Calvin Holcombe, AIA, Architect.
Calvin and Carolyn Rhinehart fell in love during their senior year at Highland Springs HS. They married in 1956. Every day during their 69 years of marriage, Calvin thanked God for his lovely wife. They had 3 children, Elizabeth (Beth), John (Johnny) and David. Calvin was preceded in death by his brother, Larry of New Braunfels, TX. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Bon Air; daughter, Elizabeth Fedorko (Dan) of Falls Church, VA.; granddaughters, Ashleigh (Cabe), Kaitlyn, and Alexandra; grandson Owen; and great-grandchildren, Skylar, Noah, Madelynn, Lenny and Raelyn.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Thursday, June 26 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Woody Funeral Home- Huguenot Chapel 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, VA 23113. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 27 at Woody Funeral Home.
A private family service will be held at Washington Memorial Park Cemetery.
