John was preceded in death by his father, John Rice Simpson Sr.; his mother, Ruth Wood Simpson; his sister, Margaret Lee Deale; and his son, Terry Lee Simpson. He is survived by his spouse, Brenda Feeback Simpson; his son, Christopher John Simpson (Laura); his daughter, Rose Renae Simpson; and his grandson, Tyler Scott Simpson.
John’s early years reflected a steady determination and a generous spirit. He lettered in Football and Track and graduated from Manchester High School, Class of 1964, before attending Richmond Professional Institute—steps that spoke to a young man willing to work for what mattered and to carry himself with purpose.
He was also an active Boy Scout as a boy, where he learned the values of leadership, service, and integrity that stayed with him throughout his life. As an adult, he continued his commitment to Scouting by serving in various volunteer leadership capacities.
A hard-working provider and a thoughtful presence, John devoted 39 years to Verizon as a central Office Technician, serving with reliability and skill until his retirement. In parallel, he answered the call to serve his country as a dedicated member of the U.S. Army National Guard from 1965 to 1991, giving decades of faithful commitment marked by consistency, discipline, and care for those alongside him.
John’s life was also rooted in service to his church and community. A dedicated church member and deacon for Winfree Church—and formerly Cosby Church—he offered his time and heart in ways that were steady, practical, and sincere. He also supported Gideons International Charity and helped as a state membership coordinator, extending his kindness beyond his immediate circles and into a wider mission of service.
