Kathleen Mary Kincaid

Kathy grew up in northern New Jersey before making Richmond her home for nearly 50 years. She built a distinguished career as a typographer and desktop publishing pioneer, working at the leading edge of personal computing in the 1980s and helping shape web design and user experience through the 1990s and 2000s. She spent the majority of her career in the banking industry, with Crestar and later SunTrust Banks, until her retirement.

Even in retirement, Kathy kept working, spending more than a decade at the reception desk of Woody Funeral Home in Midlothian, VA, where she found deep satisfaction in supporting grieving families during some of their hardest moments.

Kathy was a tireless single mother who raised two children on her own, with a strength and dedication that defined her life. Music was one of her greatest joys. She sang in church choirs from childhood onward, and in her senior years was a proud, longtime member of Jubilation Choir and Ovation Chorus.

She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Marion Viehl. She is survived by her siblings, Judy Bellman, Richard Viehl, and Nancy Cozza, and their families; her daughter Kelly Kincaid; her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Jennifer Kincaid; and her beloved granddaughter, Savannah.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Sandy Erhart, a treasured family friend of more than 40 years, who was more like a sister to Kathy, going far beyond the bounds of friendship to help Kathy live as independently as possible in her final years. The family is also deeply grateful to the staff of Watercrest Fredericksburg for the extraordinary care, comfort, and dignity they provided Kathy in the final months of her life.

A memorial service will be held on October 17 at 1:00 pm at Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Road, Midlothian, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Ovation Chorus (select memorial gift and add a memo that states “For Ovation in memory of Kathy Kincaid) or to the Forward Foundation, which helps bridge the gap for single working parents in Greater Richmond.
